Paying Large Amount by Debit Card

Hi
I'm going to Ikea tomorrow to order a kitchen (my husband is installing it himself) but I am predicting I will be spending around £3,000 if not a little more. I have an American Express card and a Barclays debit card that I use for shopping. I see on Ikea's website that they do not accept American Express which I find a bit surprising because even my tiny hairdresser's takes it. However, that leaves me with the debit card.
Now there is no problem with funds because I can transfer the money from our savings account into the current account so there will be enough to cover it but I am wondering if there would be any other reason why I would not be able to pay a large amount by debit card.
The card was rejected in December when I tried to use it to pay for something but that was because I was not expecting to use it and the funds were not in there. I just gave it a try as there was a mix up with my husband's Nationwide card and I did not have the AE card at that time.
I have a Nationwide card but have no idea what the pin is as I only use it for shopping online. I am quite happy to use the debit card but if there is a verified by Visa to go through I only have a vague idea what the password is.

Call your card issuer and let them know about your purchase. When it refers, which it probably will, for a security check, as long as there are cleared available funds in the account it should be authorised. Verified by Visa is only used online but you may be asked to answer some security questions.0

Thank you. I will do that. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0

I have put over £9k on a Nationwide debit card single transaction recently, and it went through without question. Slightly worrying, really!0

Just in case anyone else needs to know, I just spoke to the Barclays advisor and she said that the payment may just go through but it could be picked up by the fraud team. She said nothing can be done to stop that but if it happens I am just to call them on the number on the card and answer some security questions so that they can authorise the payment. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0

Well, sometime tried to buy £250 of make up online with our Nationwide card. The only thing that stopped it was the Verified by Visa. The fraudster didn't know our password. However, we have been issued a new card and its messed everything up. I tried to buy cinema tickets with the new card and it wouldn't go through so now have to use the American Express. I don't really mind though as its a cashback card. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0 -
We bought our car using a Nationwide debit card.
The funds had been transferred into our current account a couple of days before, and I phoned Nationwide helpline to ensure there would be no problems.
Everything went through fine at the dealers, no problem at all, although the dealer said that it isn't always as straightforward.
Good luck0 -

I bought a car (£6K) on my debit card no problems. The dealer had to ring the bank for authorisation (it didn't tell them in advance), but after I spoke to them, it went through no problems.0

It was the same when we bought a car which was £13,000 we informed the bank we were going to do it a few days before paying for it.
We got to the dealers paid by card, they had to call a number to authorise the payment, we were asked a few questions to confirm it was us buying it, the payment went through.
I guess its down to each bank as to what they do when your paying for something that is what they consider outside your normal spending pattern.Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both. :cool:0
