Flatmates have 2000W Tower Fan On Every Night, Bill Share question

Greetings,

We moved into a flat 1 month ago, we are supposed to be sharing electricity bills with 2 other flatmates (couple), who have a 2000W Tower Fan in their room, which works every night for 1 month!

Basically they turn it on when they get home from work from 6pm, and have it till 2nd day in the morning when they are off for work, so there must be at least 12 hours. And they use the fan everyday, regardless of weather/temperature...

The question is - we only have normal usage, ie computers & lights in our room, how should we share with them?

Or to make question clear, how much should they pay for here? We are currently with southern electric now.

Thanks a million for your advice!!!

Quite a good chart here - you can enter your electricity rate if you know it

£28.6p per hour for standard rate

Sorry, that is for heaters but 2000w is 2000w - surely???

As floopnoodle says a fan should not use 2000W unless it heats as well.

If it is a heater (I cannot think why they would need it in summer) I would read the meter every day. if it is 2000W for 12 hours that is 24 units which amounts to about £3.50 per day I presume they will be paying two thirds of that.

    Hi,

it is a dyson tower fan, that has cooling function (in addition to heating) too! I have no idea why they need it every night, but they just have it!!

PS: Acutally they also bought their own new hoover, which is 2200W that is used very frequently too! They also have TV, stereo & a toaster in their room!
  • Think carefully before going down this route. It's a very common problem in student house shares and tends to lead to a lot of fighting and 'spying' and never actually gets sorted.

They might turn around and say well you use the washing machine more or take a bath instead of shower.

If you don't like it then find new flatmates; it's the simpler way.

If they have spent £300 on a fan heater they clearly have more money than sense.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

It is really very very unlikely that they are having their tower fan/heater on HEAT all night every night, which is what would cost money. On cooling only mode you've probably wasted more energy creating this thread and having lots of people reply. We are talking probably not even a penny a night! So what if they want it on every night, you're not going to start policing their use of appliances are you - if you are, you don't want a flat share, you want your own flat.

What are you here for? Btw don't reply unless you want to waste energy yourself, on the contrary to what you said.

2kWh for a fan surely they wont have it on heat mode this time of year, if its on cool mode I cant see how it can use 2kWh even for a Dyson it would be a tornado at 2kWh. I have a fan on each night but just a cheap fan but I have my reasons as I have sleep issues and it helps me sleep better which waking up with a headache

How much do you spend for electricity if you don't mind me asking? Just to get an idea about bill...

Why not email Dyson customer service and ask what the usage is before deciding it must be mega expensive ?

  • If they are showing this wasteful attitude to energy at this time of the year, wait till it gets properly cold, they l be getting a couple of more fan heaters in and blasting out the heat. Get out while the goings good !
