Sky broadband help

Options
Hello,

I have a sky broadband connection, but it goes down every 10 to 15 minutes. The only way I can get it to start working again is to unplug the modem, and then reconnect it, I have already had to uninstall my firewall (Panda), and only have the windows firewall , but before that it wouldn't work at all.

I've spent a fortune onto their help line, and as we have exhausted all the items on the support peoples scripts, they won't help me anymore!

Has anyone got any ideas about what might be causing this?

And to anyone thinking of changing to sky broadband - my advice is DON'T!!!

Thanks in advance

if you have gone through all the advice from help lines it may be the modem is faulty. It may be the sky service is having problems. As for firewall. I wouldn't worry, basically a waste of system memory, resources & time as it is virtually unessesary

ok have you gotta router with this package?

if so it will no doubt have a firewall built in therefore you should turn of all other firewalls,
having 2 or more firewalls could affect the connection,

also try changing the micro filter cos they can sometimes slow it down aswell.

i had sky BB and didnt have any problems with it.

    hope this helps.

    Hello,

thanks for replying. Yes, it has a router. But, they recommend installing McAfee (comes on a CD which they supply) so I asssume you need a firewall??

What is a microfilter? (Please excuse my ignorance).

    nps
a microfilter is the little box that you plug the phone line into and it splits it into phone and net.

dont bother with mcaffe, maybe just phone them to make sure the modem does have a firewall built it, (im 99.9% sure it has though)

are you using wireless? does it go down if you use wired?

The netgear router is nat'ed so has a firewall, mcafee is a good av package as well, so nothing wrong with using it if you don't have av
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Try turning UPNP off, that seems to be a problem on Sky's routers.

    Hello,

I've spent a lot of time today looking at this, and it turns out that there is a problem with th UPnP. I have now disabled this, and the connection hasn't gome down since.

Only question is, what IS UPnP?

    Thanks to all who answered!

UPNP is supposed to automatically open ports for certain apps, P2P etc.

If you need to allow apps to access certain ports, you'll have to forward those ports manually if UPNP is off, but unless you have problems don't worry about it.
