I've taken a laptop as hand luggage and in my case in the hold.
The only difference I've found is that it is heavier to lug around as hand luggage and you have to take it out of the bag when you go through security.
  • Hand luggage; you are not asked to turn it on.

    Mortgage-free Glee!
Hand luggage - stops the thieving air side baggage handlers in all airports from dipping their grubby hands on your hard earned goods. Or breaking it for fun hahaha what a laugh.

Might be a stupid question, but why do you want to take it ?

Taking a laptop/netbook etc on holiday is perfectly normal these days apart from anything else you can keep in contact with friends and and relatives and you can share photos and video with them, sure beats the hell out of sending postcards that don't arrive until 2 weeks after you've come home. Most hotels have WiFi these days, many have free WiFi as do caf!'s so you can check out things to do, places to go by reading other peoples reviews rather that taking the word of people that have a vested interest in selling you excursions.

Oh sorry, back on topic, take it on as hand luggage.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world

Why not take it? Our hotel has free wifi and i'm going with 3 teenage kids so thats why! It costs a fortune to have to pay to use the hotel computers!! Thankyou for all your replies,i've never taken my laptop abroad before so its very helpful to know that its quite simple to do:D

Yep, my experience of hotel internet cafes is not a good one, 1 Euro usually gets you 10 mins. the machines are so slow and the internet conection so bad that it can take that long just to log into Facebook.

  • I would love to take my laptop on holiday but I worry about where I would keep it when out and about? The safes aren't big enough to store a laptop. How will you keep it safe?

    How about a laptop lock.?
  • Taken a laptop on holiday a few times now, more lately an iPad which is much more convenient. Just need to take it out of your hand luggage when you go through security. Really useful for checking restaurants etc on Tripadvisor etc.
