Pay for trial shift?

I am currently unemployed but it was nothing to do with the jobcentre, the company were advertising they had work available and I applied and had an interview.
I forgot to mention they did ask us to bring bank information to the work trial but as it was so busy they didn't have time to speak to any of the workers other than to say "Here's the job you're doing" and "Thanks we'll get back to you all, goodbye".0 -

Agreed I have never done a trial for pay. Has always been the case in my opinion. OP in my opinion it will pointless writing to the company and asking or even threatening legal action, best advice is just to accept it and move on.0 -
Indeed. Most were either doing trials or had done them very recently and there were a few 'veterans' scattered about.0

fairly standard to work an unpaid day as a trial in catering0

Thanks for all the responses!
Don't get me wrong i'd love to be paid for the work I did but I don't think i'd ever threaten legal action for such a small amount!
I just wanted a general opinion on this and to see what was normal practise and such. I will still write them a quick letter to see what they say as they did ask me to bring my bank details. Maybe I assumed a little and they implied a little but there's no harm in asking and won't take much time.0 -
I bet the people that paid for the catering at their wedding would be interested that they had untrained unpaid staff at the event.
Local paper might be interested.0 -
Well, if they asked you to bring bank details, then that suggests they intended to pay you.
However, if they didn't also ask to see your passport (or documents to prove your right to work in the UK) then that suggests they're not terribly well organised ...Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
you would have to declare it anyway,so why get paid?Blackpool_Saver is female, and does not live in Blackpool0
