Washing machine stopped in mid cycle

Hi,

Haven't got the make at hand, but my wahsing machine yesterday stopped in mid cycle. The on-off light was flashing along with one of the other led lights.

When I checked the manual it just said 'this means there is a problem with the machine' but didn't say what it could be.

I did as instructed, turning it off by the machine. I was unable to switch it off at the plug and unplug as suggested as it's behind the machine which I can't move.

I started the cycle again, and sure enough after a while it stopped again. This time I switched it off again and then put it on rinse and it finished the cycle. I assumed that all powder would've been washed away as I'd started the machine twice.

Is it worth getting fixed. It's already been mended once when it filled up with water despite being switched off. It's no longer covered. I hardly use it but it's been used a lot recently as I've had to do extra loads as my dad has been in hospital and I've been doing his washing.

If I was to get a new one I can't move the old one out. Would a shop remove the old one for me or do they expect the space to be vacant before they get to the house? Sorry for the waffle but I'm panicking as usual:(

Hi, so when yours does the same what do you then do? As I said I started it again from the beginning but it stopped halfway through the wash again. Luckily I was able to rinse it and hang the clothes out.

When you've stopped and started it again, does it start from the beginning and finish?

Without make and model, and in the absence of a crystal ball, all is speculation. You don't say at what point in the cycle it stops, but if it won't drain out then the first thing to check is the drain hose. Is it blocked or kinked? Then check the pump impeller, there may be a coin or similar blocking the impeller.
Some shops will remove the old one at extra charge, but you'll need to disconnect it, which is very straightforward-unplug it and then turn off the supply valve or valves and disconnect the supply and drain hoses.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I'm jiggered then, as I can't even get the machine out the gap as it's too tight a fit. panic!

It stopped just after the wash cycle I think. It didn't look like there was any water in. When I started it again from the start it did the same, that's when I just turned the switch to 'rinse' and it continued. I didn't understand half of what you said!...

Post the make and model and you might get some more meaningful help...
Open the door, put your arm into the drum and pull it out that way.

Washers often stop working if the filter/drain/pump is jammed. Sometimes there is a flap at the front which can be opened, the screw thing undone (need a bowl for the water) and cleared out, sometimes they're underneath the machine and the thing needs tipping up for removal/refitting. Second needs some muscle.

I think if the lights are flashing though and you turn it off then on again, and it works, I presume its something todo with the electronics.

Not necessarily, I've had it happen more than once with this machine, if it stops I can get to the end of cycle by switching on/off using the rinse mode, and generally getting the water level down by whatever means necessary, but once the filter/pump's been cleared it works properly. (I'm always convinced it's something else but've learned to check that first)
