    Part of the Furniture
to us the price of flights, barring some super great bargain deal, means it's a false economy for a short trip if you don't have the means to fly long haul regularly...since flights will probably be the most expensive part of the trip - we would normally look to maximize the time at our destination, not cut it short...of course if holiday funds are in short supply and a longer trip makes it impossible due to additional hotel costs then OK.

I guess we normally look at it this way - the cost of flights + the time it takes to get to our destination (especially when you add in time getting to and at the airport)...I know some do go to the US for long weekends...to us 24 hours travelling return (including time to, at and from airports) is a lot for a 3-day trip...but I know some like to do it as it gives them lots of small breaks during the year rather than a couple longer ones.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

You can get much cheaper hotels by looking at Brooklyn, which has some great nightlife, bars and restaurants. We stayed on Manhattan but next time will stay in Brooklyn, the subway is easy and quick and pretty cheap and so you can just travel too and from Manhattan.

I loved the Pod hotel, some rooms have shared bathrooms but they were spotlessly clean, and really nice.
