British Gas not sending me a final bill!!!

Can't explain why they told you a different amount when you called - the person you spoke to may just have worked it out incorrectly. If they've charged you up to the reading you gave them then the bill is probably correct I'm afraid. I think that perhaps the direct debit was set a little too low for the gas - I'm sure a property occupied by 5 people would use quite a bit more than £45 per month in winter.

It's not great that they took so long to get the final bill out to you - it may be worth contacting them to explain it will be difficult for you to get the money from your former housemates, they may knock some money off as a goodwill gesture. Sorry I can't come up with anything more positive!

The computer doesn't close accounts and generate a bill instantly, so the agent has get the system to calculate the bill without issuing it, if they didn't do it properly then it wouldn't give the right figures. If your daughter phones in and kicks up enough of a fuss they may give her a few quid off as a goodwill gesture, but it wouldn't be very much I'm afraid.
