Is it legal to drive in the UK with a broken ankle? Any advice gratefully received :-)

Regarding the legality of driving with a broken limb, according to the DirectGov website:

"If you have broken a limb you do not need to tell the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) about it."

However, it does advise you to consult your insurers and to consider whether you can control the car.

    Hope this helps
  • Thank you very much for your replies. You have all more or less confirmed what I thought. It might not be illegal but its probably not very sensible.

Only if its your left ankle that is broken.

Mate of mine broke his and he was advised not to drive for 3 months whilst it healed (cast then strapped) to avoid further damage.

I was just about to say that maybe the post should have been titled "Is is sensible to drive with a broken ankle?"

Down to your ability to control the car, and the fact that if it goes wrong you are going to cop most of blame.;););)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Or you've actually taken the time to learn to drive with your left foot.
  • Hi,

you could get the car fitted with hand controls, which control brake, clutch, accelerator, though may take a bit of time to get used to.

You might need to advise your insurance of change as well.

I wouldn't advise trying to drive like that.
I broke my toe once on my right foot and couldn't put any pressure on it, but my Sister phoned up in the early hours to say she was stuck and needing picking up. Pressing the accelerator slowly and gently wasn't to bad but if i'd had to try to do an emergency stop i'd have had no chance. As it was i had to break using my left foot. Thank God it was in the early hours and the roads quiet.

does it matter which leg it is for automatics? I never drove an automatic but I think you can use either leg can't you? You just have brake and gas, never need to use both pedals at once. So you can relearn with any foot can't you?
