munk, depends on the bank but it's common. Best thing you can do really is to arrange an overdraft sufficient to cover situations like this. Say a couple of months of salary worth so you can move around that much without risk of charges. Assuming you don't use the overdraft for routine borrowing, that is.
The frustrating thing is this was a complete one off and there was already a sizable amount in the account, just not quite enough to cover the transfer until the cheque had cleared. I'm just surprised the cheque amount showed up on the account balance immediately rather than after it had cleared. As I said above I'd forgotten it was a cheque when I set up the transfer, just presumed because the account balance had been credited that it was available for transfer.mrcow wrote:Last week I paid a large check into my account and the "available balance" was adjusted immediately along with the account balance.
There is either a glitch on it, or they have deliberately adjusted the way the balances are viewed.
This was my experience exactly. End of day, a lesson learnt to check the 'available funds' before moving money around and not to rely on the account balance alone.0
