The money was taken six hours after the OP last remembers having her card. That doesn't mean it was taken six hours after her card was actually taken.

So we can take it that, that was the last time it was used. As I explained a fraudster taking the card does not wait that long...

With regards to the PIN, there's a lot of reasons how someone could know what it is; shoulder surfing, a camera on the ATM, as suggested earlier in the thread, if it was taken by someone she knows they might know her PIN if they had seen the letter it came on for example,

Again stolen card. Do you think anyone not known to the card holder would wait that long to take cash. Given most people notice a card missing straight away.
Yes all are valid methods of obtaining the PIN. 1st two are used by real fraudsters. So you can rule these out. As they work to very short timescales and will dump a card after getting cash in minutes.
2nd two, now that is getting into family/friends/workmate country.

a hacked chip and PIN reader in a store? - not sure if that last one is possible to be honest :p

    Yes it is....

Fraudster obtains pin reader. doctors inside to read magstrip and read key presses.
Was known that they then went into shops and swopped them over. Easy to pickup on, as the bottom is not sealed....
I get some funny looks when I remove the reader from its stand when entering my PIN...

Only problem with this is a card produced from the data, cannot be used in a UK atm. As they do not have a chipped card.

On a more general point I wouldn't know a card is missing for days if not weeks.
It would depend on when I came to use it again, which again depends on what I am doing - and obviously I would have no idea when it went missing.

I think you're misunderstanding what I'm saying in the first part of your post. The OP said the card was used six hours after she last used it.. but what I'm saying is that that doesn't mean it was stolen when she last used it, it could have been taken hours later.

She could've used the card, then it could have been stolen five and a half hours after she used it.. fraudster would then have taken money within half an hour of taking it. You see what I mean?

I admit this scenario of mine is getting ridiculous, I'm just trying to say it's possible, if not probable, for this sort of thing to happen.

Thanks for clarifying about the hacked chip and pin machines! I get strange looks for playing with the bit where you put the card in and briefly checking there's no cameras on ATMs :p

Start to get into the habit of checking then...

A delay in advise of a missing card can mean you could be held liable.

I understand what you are saying. But it is not how your normal fraudster works.
They rely on a quick in and out.
I would lay odds on someone known to the card holder using the card.
Should they be held liable for this. I know that the card holder did not know or make the transaction, but by not ensuring someone known to them could not get card & pin is where it swings.
I have to play not only by PSD, but also by our internal rules. Of which each bank will have their own.
In these cases of a known person it has to be reported to the police, by the card holder as they are standing the loss at that time, and they have to be prepared to take it all the way to court.
