Most card issuers (Barclays I'm sure do) have a way to "unlock" the PIN at an ATM, if you attempt to use the card with the wrong PIN. Even when you block your card offline, for example, in a PINsentry device.

The thing is, I never needed to use that option, so I have no idea what kind of information do they need, and whether you'll then be able to set a new PIN if you actually forgot the old one. Does anyone have an idea?

The information they provide is quite vague, perhaps intentionally:

if your card is locked, by entering pin incorrectly 3 times at a chip/pin machine you can reset it at an atm if you remember what the correct pin should be.

Just enter correct pin, and choose the option pin management/unlock card

Thanks for the info! However, that's not quite useful for the OP - they forgot the correct PIN. The only occasion I can think this can be useful if practical jokers can get to play with your card...

There is such a beast as a Chip & Signature Card.

More consumer friendly, and you never need worry about someone obtaining your PIN and hitting an ATM.

But the OP has a chip & pin card.

Yes, the Payments Council has launched a chip and signature campaign but the banks are not amused. Personally, I wouldn't touch one with a barge-poll.

Let's hope your card isn't nicked or cloned, and your PIN compromised and you fall victim to card fraud before reporting your card last or stolen.
  • Not sure, I know with Capital One you are able to view it online after confirming information about yourself. Maybe Barclaycard have a similar function?
