I had mine done by an online company with certified copies for twenty quid. I feel happier with an 'official' document, even tho I know you could do it yourself.

But the document you paid for is no more 'official' than the document you can produce yourself.

  • A bit of a late reply in this thread but I've used UK Deed Poll Service a few years ago and so far not had any problems with it being accepted :)

I know, but the hassle of doing it myself - trying to get it printed (don't have one of my own and work are very particular about personal printing being done at work) for the minimal cost - £20 for the original and 5 certified copies, was more than worth it for me.

Just a warning as much as you can draw up a document yourself. When it comes to changing your name with organisations such as banks and your driving licence they may not except them.

It's not expensive to do it via uk deed poll service for the sake of £35 it could save you a lot of hassle

I changed my name about 10 years ago; a solicitor drew up the document, the wording was very similar to that stated above by cheeswright. I got a friend to witness my signature and used that document to change my passport, driving licence, in fact everything (although I wasn't using Paypal at the time). No one questioned the document at all, it was merely printed on legal (yellow) paper, anyone could have written it.

This is a moneysaving site, please dont waste £35 by paying a company to type up a one page document; in fact I'll type it up for you for £30 :D

ETA: MSE wasn't even a twinkle in Martin Lewis' eye at the time I changed my name .... but in any event I didn't pay anyway, not sure whether that was because the solicitors forgot to bill me for it or whether it was because I had become good friends with the solicitor's secretary and she waived the fee

My father, who's now my Other Mother, had experience of the above.

She found it was £35 well spent to get the banks, DVLA, pension providers, passport office, and housing association on side with her new name!

When changing a name, it's best to get as many agencies notified in as short a time as possible. Having the deed poll notices allows you to do that without comeback or further questions that might delay important changes and cause a 'knock on' effect.. Example; your bank account in your old name will not accept cheques made out to your new name.

well I got the original and 5 certified copies for £20, so you are overcharging ;););)
