Prebooking seats

I haven't travelled abroad for a long time but on this years holiday I got an email about pre booking our seats - which I did as I felt worried about running the risk of not being seated with our young children. This seems all wrong and cost me £40. How can airlines get away with this? any thoughts?

If you hadn't pre-booked it is extremely unlikely that children would have been split from at least one of their parents, especially if you check in early.0

It depends what airline but I know that with BA if you check in online 24 hours before departure you can select your seats for free.
Also with most airlines if you're good and check in 2 1/4 hours before your flight you can usually ask to be together, and check-in staff will try to do as you ask.0
