can still be done.. even free tank of fuel/mats etc is still some sort of discount.
also please dont carry 7k in cash on you.. use your debit card ;) as there should be no fees for a debit card transaction..
depends what car it is. if its a common car then if they refuse to budge just move to next garage.. .

What car is it? I bet you can get pretty close to that new just now. Some Fords have over a third off at the moment.

There's no point in haggling with the bigger car showrooms; you just end up frustrated and paying the same amount! Just walk in there, hand over the cash and take the car would be my advice; then use the time you saved relaxing in a coffee shop!

There's always a deal to be done. The problem is that car salesmen are trained to deal with hagglers. If you're not good at haggling, unrealistic in your expectations or if you get the dealers back up, you'll come away disappointed.

I've never paid sticker price for a car in my life - and I've bought all bar one from a main franchised dealer. I've then taken the saving to that relaxing coffee shop you mentioned.

Slightly dubious assumption. We spent £12.5k on a one-year old Mondeo last year. We could have got a brand new car for considerably less, yes. But not a similar size, style, quality, etc.

OP - our Mondeo was from a main Ford dealer. They barely budged on price and we were paying cash (we only got £500 off but we did get rear parking sensors thrown in which was something we wanted doing anyway). Did repeatedly offer us finance though. We were happy with the price we ended up paying based on other similar cars available in our area. One other dealer had crazy prices and if we'd found a car at that one then we would have wanted a good discount. All comes down to how fair the price is in the first place, as mentioned earlier.

While it's always right to haggle, waving around pound notes to a trader means nothing. If their upfront, law-abiding folk, then its just a hassle, from being a security issue to meaning someone has to physically go to a night-safe. If they are not such upstanding citizens, it might mean the invoice may be adjusted so HMRC doesn't see as much for it, but little else.
Where physical cash still to this day, probably more so in the "plastic" era is buying from private sellers. Few people see or handle big money and it always gets a strike.

I am about to buy a used (2011) car for £6999 from a dealership.

Rather than going for the expensive finance deal via the garage I was able to get a far cheaper bank loan.

I shall therefore be able to buy the car, either in cash or with my debit card, so was wondering whether it would be possible to ask for some discount. If so, what would be considered a fair discount.

    Many thanks
free mats, tank of fuel what ever you can get out of a dealer "If you give me this I can pay cash today"

When I say we paid cash by the way, we paid with debit card. :)

OP did say they weren't necessarily going to go in with £7k in twenties. :)

Problem with cash, as a few dealers will tell you, is the amount of fake notes doing the rounds, and the fact the dealership will lose the money when they bank it.

Yes agree totally, there is a limit you can pay in CASH, not sure how much exactly, but they will want payment by card (debit/credit). Something to do with money laundering etc ...
