Buying a car in cash .. What discount might I get ?
I am about to buy a used (2011) car for £6999 from a dealership.
Rather than going for the expensive finance deal via the garage I was able to get a far cheaper bank loan.
I shall therefore be able to buy the car, either in cash or with my debit card, so was wondering whether it would be possible to ask for some discount. If so, what would be considered a fair discount.
Many thanks

None, the garage make money out of you having finance.0

point me to the facts and i'd be inclined to believe you.
as it stands its dealer dependant, you may be able to haggle such as dropping HPI fee's for e.g, and filling the tank of fuel paying for the tax.
discount on the next service, haglle a bit more for the part ex you wish to use.
full valet with nice smelling airfreshner.
look over the car, any chips and dents? ooh that would cost a bit to have sorted there mr salesman, how about you drop some cash off for me to have it rectified?0 -
As stated by Sgt Pepper, the garage will make commision selling you a finance package.
That does not mean that you wont get a discount though. With buying a motor, there are various things that can get you a discount such as:
1. The length of time the dealer has had the car on the forecourt.
2. The mark up he has on it and what other local, similar cars are going for.
3. New stock coming in and the need to shift some stock.
4. How common the car is. (I got a big discount when I bought a Vectra a few years ago because there are shed loads for sale. If you were buying a rarer car, the demand may generally be higher so discounts would be harder to come by)
The thing is, different dealers will have differing points at which they will let motors go regarding price and differing times they ideally dont want them sat on the forecourt past. You will never know how much you will get off until you turn up, test drive and let them know your ready to buy.0 -

You could do all that even if you took the finance. When I go in and say I'm buying cash it's satisfying just to watch their face drop. You scullion! You rampallian! You fustilarian! I’ll tickle your catastrophe (Henry IV part 2)0 -
It does not matter what discount you get, the price you pay is what counts.
What's the car? Milage then we can advise what you should pay.0 -
Even if they offer you a better deal by taking-out one of their finance agreements, there is nothing stopping you paying-it-off right away with the money you loaned from the Bank.Never Knowingly Understood.

There's no point in haggling with the bigger car showrooms; you just end up frustrated and paying the same amount! Just walk in there, hand over the cash and take the car would be my advice; then use the time you saved relaxing in a coffee shop!0
