While they were vague, they were completely right. There is nothing at all to worry about. I don't think stealing cards to use them in Tesco self-serve machines (which are all covered by CCTV) is really going to be a major thing!
It seems a bit like a major flaw though, I wonder if this is just Tesco's self service machines or is this the standard EMV policy if the chip cannot be read?0 -

I've processed several transactions where the chip couldn't be read but the signature strip could be (though not recently). No idea if that would work just by putting the card in backwards - or just if it sees the chip there but can't read it properly.
Why is it a major flaw? The system worked fine when every single transaction was done by this method, a small possible loophole in Tesco (or even every machine) isn't going to be a big deal!0 -
There is a genuine concern here for cardholder safety.
Whilst it is true that the cardholder has a choice whether they use self service machines, the issue is that should they loose their card any fraudster could trick the machine in to asking them to sign and have off with the cardholders money without the signature being checked or such securities being in place like Chip & Pin.
Fallback is dependant on the individual card issuer. Some have disabled it, others haven't.
Some issuers disable fallback but have the option of sending out chip and signature cards for those that have medical reasons for not being able to use chip and pin. I think this is the most secure setup for a card issuer to have.
As others have said however, signed transactions shift fraud liability away from the cardholder on to the retailer and card issuer.
If a transaction is made with PIN and later reported as fraudulent the blame falls on the cardholder for "being negligent with their PIN security" but getting a refund for a fraudulent signed-for transaction is a cynch in comparison

Reading this through, I don't think OP had to sign though. So no PIN entered and no signature.
I'd be concerned about this too tbh, the only time I've come across similar is in a car park so not high value. How much was the transaction for?0 -

Does it really matter? I'm fairly confident I could learn most peoples signature well enough to fool a till operator (who doesn't overly care and is only really looking to see if it's vaguely similar) with ease in a few minutes. My own is certainly easy to copy - and so have everyone's I've ever served and had a chance to look at it!
And although not relevant to the vast majority on here (though I guess you card could either be cloned or shipped over there), several Supermarkets in Australia let you use your card with no verification under around £25 off the top of my head. Not to mention contactless.0 -

Yeah no signature or PIN. Around £40 was the transaction.0 -

Maybe not to you, but it does to me! Why have PINs or require signatures at all...?
Your earlier post (and those of others) I don't think understood that no signature had been taken:
They weren't. Pre-PIN, you signed for transactions.callum9999 wrote: »Why is it a major flaw? The system worked fine when every single transaction was done by this method, a small possible loophole in Tesco (or even every machine) isn't going to be a big deal!
