There is nothing illegal to have 2 elec meters feeding zones in properties such as one to the house and one to a garage/conservatory, etc. Some people have kilns.

    Its just unusual.

It comes will some process risks as mentioned above and you may struggle to get a supplier to understand it. This meant 1 MPAN for 2 meters (this is only allowed if the same type of billing is taking place e.g. both single rate, any change means splitting them to have seperate MPAN's) with some distributors whereas others always insisted on a seperate MPAN for each meter.

I would suggest making a general enquiry to the distributor first as they will understand this. Then go to the supplier using the distributors advice since they will then have less of a issue to argue if the distributor us fine with the supply still there and a seperate MPAN with a Trading status.

A way to get around the problems is the address. If one address was the property and the other such as garage, it would less of a problem as they know what they are for.

Its an unusual circumstance though so I can't say for sure that they would be happy with it.

    Less sure on the gas.

You can only have 1 MPAN/2 meters if they are fed from a single main fuse not 2 because of the safety risks as there is only a single energisation status for an MPAN.

Therefore the issue will be getting a supplier to put 2 MPANs on a single bill when they are not related.

And yes it is not unknown for properties to have 2 MPANs but in some cases the 2nd one can be for the pool heater.

  • This is a view from someone who knows very little about this apart from logic etc.

There are plenty of maisonettes, apartments etc out there that are interconnected by doors (presumably fire doors?) that have separate meters.

If you are going to turn them back into two separate properties and there is going to be no permanent interlink between the two, then why even bother mentioning the fact to the utility suppliers? They will surely not know any different.

I believe any meter readers (the only people linked to the utility company that would come into the property) that come round are independent from the utility company so they would not know there was not supposed to be a door there!

Yes and some distributors insisted one the "1 cut out, 1 property, 1 MPAN" approach as opposed to others that used a shared fuse. Such distributors also applied a shared fuse to 2 seperate properties causing issues in doing anything with them later.

Putting them on the bill is not an issue for MPAN association since this rule is an industry one that MPAS require. Suppliers don't always hard code their systems with this dependency. A subtly address change might resolve this but the distributors side is more of a concern given they will use the PO and may see a duplicate.

Besides, if the meters are not able to be registered as associated, the supplier can create that link.
