Turned down by RBS?

I applied for the 18 month 0% card from last week's email and got a letter yesterday to say it was rejected.
I have a good credit history so went to check using the cash back experian free trial and nothing dodgy there.
Have RBS been very strict with this one? Can I ask for a copy of my application (did it online and got no confirmation email or anything) in case I filled something in wrong? Would they reconsider anyway?

Out of interest, did you try Equifax too? Looking at my reports, Experian doesn't have some of the info which Equifax does.

Don't think RBS use equifax, I have free equifax access via cap one card and RBS application does not show as search on Equifax or Call Credit.

I did try equifax, but failed their security questions :") Asking about when I took out and what credit limit I had on credit cards which I only had for the 0% then scrapped.
I could have sent in every bit of ID I own, but couldn't be bothered just for the free trial and cashback!
  • What other card limits/debts do you have in relation to your income?

You could potentially appeal against the decision if you think that they misinterpreted your situation or didn't have all the information. Here is a quote from their FAQ:
Can I appeal against your decision?

Yes, although we cannot give any assurances that our original decision will be overturned. You should support your appeal by providing any additional relevant information that was not taken into account at the time of our original decision. Full details of our appeals procedure can be obtained from your local branch.

I also got turned down for the same card, despite the website telling me that I had been approved 'in principle' during the application, I also got two more letters from RBS three days apart, the first one confirming exactly the same as the website, that i'd been approved and that my Mastercard would arrive with the welcome pack within 10 days, and a second one, saying the application had been declined.

I work full time, have an average salary, and have had never had any debt either now or in the past, nor have ever missed a payment on anything. I don't have any loans, and my other credit card balances are clear.

Today, I get a further letter, telling me that my application is 'on hold'

So thats approved, declined and on hold, all in the same week for the same card, from the same online application.

I get the impression that RBS haven't got a clue what the hell they are doing.

  • I got declined by RBS credit too - the latest 22 month 0% card. I checked my Equifax credit report - all seems fine so I'm still surprised. RBS did check Equifax for me. I'm annoyed that they don't openly share their criteria and which part of it I failed to meet.

  • As bizarre as this sounds - if you've never had much debt and always cleared your balances each month, then CC companies may well decline your business as they will not make any money out of you. It really has nothing to do with your credit scores records etc held by Experian and the likes.

    IMO This is untrue.
What would you prefer if you ran a credit card - someone who pays back what they borrow (GETTING A PERCENTAGE OF EACH TRANSACTION) or someone who does not pay back on time you then have to employ more people to try and get you to pay back pushing up your core expenses?

Not really true considering CC companies get 3% of every transaction. They'd much prefer people who buy lots and pay it back in full every month. Saves time and money trying to get money back.
