Internet problem

Hi Wonder if someone can help me.

I connect to the internet via Virgin BB I can either use a LAN cable or wireless router. All the connections look to be ok and have turned every thing off and back on again. I get a signel through the wireless but when I try and connect to the net Firefox just comes up that it can't connect. I have swapped to IE to see if it was something to do with Firefox but the same. I have turned the firewall off still the same.

I can connect to an unsecure network and even this does not work suggesting that it is something to do with my settings and not my connection.

Any ideas what might be the problem?.

p.s. This is from my work PC

  • I'm not very techie, but on my laptop it sometimes says that and I just right click on the wireless icon at the bottom and then 'repair connection' have you tried that?

If it's from a work PC maybe it has a static IP address rather than dynamically assigned? Or perhaps your employer insists on the use of a proxy to connect to the Internet, which will not be available with your home connection

Can you get into the router config page (192.168.x.x) using a wired (LAN) connection?

If as stated in post#6 the ip address is pre-assigned at work you will probably need to set the computer to automatically obtain an ip address from the router. (don't know if it will allow you to do so without admin rights)

if its a laptop then check that the wireless function key is active.
also some lappys (eg acer) have a very small switch at the rear to activate the internet.
    Get some gorm.

What I menat by a work PC is I am typing these posts on a work pc.

Re my problem on the laptop still not working tried everything. I suspect my service may be at fault although I would still havbe thought I could of connected from my neigbours unsecurred connection.

  • Do you know if your laptop is acquiring an IP address and DNS servers etc?

Go to a command (like DOS) window (Start=>Run=>cmd). Type ipconfig /all

This will show if you have an IP address, gateway and DNS servers

If I do this and do have an IP and gateway and DNS number does this mean that there is a connection to my BB?.
