Returning to work, but pay not until October.

    A month in arrears means you work a month, then get paid. You should be paid at the end of September.

    You may be getting confused with working time IN HAND (which is usual in, eg, the building trade) which means you work two weeks before getting paid one week.

    Fair point, but seeing as the majority get paid monthly, a month in arrears would surely be the following month? If you know you get paid monthly then you work a month and get paid for that months work when payroll pay everyone, but to work a month in arrears would be, again to me, having to wait for a month following the next regular payday.

    As an example all our contracted (set hours per week)staff get paid at the end of the month ie 31st August for all hours worked in August.
    All our casual staff (varied hours each week) get paid 1 month in hand ie will get paid 30th September for all hours worked in August.

    Weird i know - but it's to do with working out exact hours in time for payroll run which is done in plenty of time for end of month.

    Technically, no. "arrears" means "end". You are either paid in advance, or in arrears. In advance means you are paid at the start of the period of work. In arrears means you are paid at the end of that work period.

    The most common method of payment for employees is in arrears. You work a month, then are paid. I just checked my own offer letter and it specifically says I will be paid in arrears. I worked a month, then was paid. It's the norm.

    I would expect you to be paid end of September - but the only thing that can put your mind at rest is a phone call for clarification, ring them they won't bite and they *may* be able to offer some kind of support if necessary.

    Also have you asked the JC Re childcare payments for your first month of work - I haven't dealt with this for a while but there *used* to be a payment from JC+ to pay for first month childcare up front - so do ring your Lone Parent advisor and ask if this is still available.

    Maybe I have been told wrong, but I have been told that when I go back to work (likely to be around November as I have to have some essays marked) some of my benefits will 'run on'. It was my lone parent advisor who told me. I didn't take much notice as I wasn't definitely on the course when I was listening to her, and am due to see her again in September.
    Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!
  • I know when I signed off in 2005(JSA) - I was asked when first wage would be due, so I said 2 weeks from now. I got JSA until that first wage came through. And not only that I also got a call to check that I was now getting my wages, but we are talking about a long time ago now.
    When I did wages - Arrears meant the following - Current month you worked then got paid at end of. Regardless of starting date. Sometimes they paid with a cheque. You could ask them to do that if it will miss the wage run to the bank. Overtime if worked was then done in arrears for the following month. In fact my OH's is still done this way. That is when he gets any OT! Not often now.
    So I would suggest that you give them a quick call and ask for Human resources dept to clarify exact situation.
    You should also be able to get some help with Child care as well.

    May need checking but when I started work, the first month I got my old rate of housing. (As if I was still not working). This should help a little. I also got a back to work grant. This was extra money paid each week for the first year.
    It has been some time since I started work but I am sure somebody on here will know if these still apply.

    Yes a month in arrears mean that you get paid at the end of the month so end September. However that will be a basic payment. If you work odd hours and unsocial hours such as NHS then you would wait until the end of October to get the additional pay from those specific hours. So to break it down say payment on Sunday is time and a half - you would get the time (basic) at the end of September but the half bit would be paid at the end of October when they have your time sheet in.
