Best Student Bank Account?

Hi all!

I know I can do a google search on this, and I will later, but I think it's best to get this kind of advice from the real experts! :p Could anyone reccomend a bank account for my 16 year old son who will be finishing A levels this year and hopefully going to univeristy in September? Special offers etc?? :D

  • I apologise if this is impertinent, but when I went up to college nothing would have annoyed me more than this kind of helicopter parenting - did your son aks you to look into these things for him?

MSE also has an extensive comparative article on student bank accounts, and an associated thread.

And I am sorry that you clearly did not have as good a relationship with your parents as I have with my son. :D

My son is a first year and he is at uni in London, we are in Northern Ireland.
He chose an account with 2 main things in mind
    1. the facility for me to put cash in the local branch here and for him seconds later in London to be able to withdraw it from a bank machine in London.
    2. No charges for banking and a 500 pound free overdraft facility
Offers change in each bank every year, I would check nearer the time.

Thank you. That's very helpful. :D

He's not going to get overdraft facilities until he's 18 so something like the Lloyds TSB Under 19's account would tide him over until then.

Visa Debit card so greater acceptance than Electron etc (although it seems to have problems with self service train ticket machines). :)

    Haha, yes :T:j
  • Hi

Is he going to uni a year early? (If he is now 16 and going to Uni in september). As Kilty pointed out, you can't get credit until you're 18.
