My friend is looking to buy a car and has seen one she liked. She wanted to check it before buying so put the registration into this website:
https://www.mycarcheck.com/

It said they had information held on the car, and asked for £14.95. As she was worried in case the car had been in an accident or had finance on it, she paid the £14.95 to see what the problems were.

After paying the money, the report came back and said they had no information on the car.

Is she entitled to a refund, as she feels the initial info that persuaded her to buy the report was very misleading.

I suppose the issue is that they hold information about the car - i.e. whether there is any credit outstanding on it, stolen or if its a write off, the fact that it came back probably means it's ok. Or are they saying they cannot even trace the car ? if so that is more worrying.

HPI are the main players in this field, and offer guarantee's with theirs.

    I've had a look.

It said they had info on her car, so she was expecting bad news. Then it said there are no accidents, etc, so she thought she had been ripped off as there was no bad info there.

She just didn't comprehend she had paid for a report to prove there was nothing dodgy with the car - doh!!

    Hi Becles,

I'm sorry your friend feels mislead. After the initial free 'ID' check, which shows that the vehicle is on our database and confirms its make & model the site does say "We have more information" to indicate that we have more information than just the make & model. It's not unusual for customers to assume that since the make & model is correct, the vehicle must be OK, but of course this is only a small part of the check.

If the vehicle is not on our database we will specifically say and we will never charge for a check in this case. Also, if we have no mileage records we won't charge for the mileage check.

We believe that the absense of bad information is just as important as any bad information. Your friend now knows that the car has not been recorded as stolen (car could be repossed if it was), not recorded as written off (could have caused issues with insurance), what mileages have been previously recorded, the ability to check the VIN (for cloned vehicles) and various other details about the car. Hopefully she now can have more confidence that the car is a good buy.

    Thanks,
    Kenneth

Am i right in thinking that the information 'mycarcheck' provide is in good faith, but you do not provide any kind of guarantee/insurance if you subsequently find that the information you have provided is not correct, hence why your cheaper than HPi for example?

Yes, correct. We do of course make every effort to ensure that our data is accurate, and we receive data from the same sources as the other data check providers (DVLA, ABI & PITO primarily), but there is no formal guarantee.

    Thanks,
    Kenneth

This site is a scam... they do not give complete information and following their legal advice will cause you heaps of trouble. Avoid this ripoff company.

  • mycarcheck.com is a rip-off scam. I checked a car on this site and got the barest of information concerning the car. All the way through the process it said £3.95. When my credit card bill came it was £8.95, when I called they were thoroughly rude and told me I had not unchecked a "mileage check" box that had included a £5 charge for mileage that wasn't even in dispute. I had two friends looking over my shoulder as I did it and none of them saw the inclusion either. AVOID - there are plenty of other car checkers who don't feel the requirement for dishonesty. I buy & sell all the time I had saved them to favourites to use on a regular basis. Believe me the are deleted now. Total refusal to credit £5 as done in error also proves scam to me. Also rude and obnoxious when you call, clearly they were used to dealing with upset customers. AVOID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will never use these rip off merchants again. They charge you £8.95 for a £3.95 search .
    Avoid at all costs !!
  • Cheers for the advice all - I was about to use this site until I read this thread. Went for the guaranteed RAC service instead - more expensive but worth it, I'd say, and still half the price of HPI who provide the data.
