The retailer is responsible for dealing with it - they do not offer a 12 month retailer guarantee, but they are responsible for being the dealing party between customer and manufacturer.
They do have to offer the warranty - sale of goods act

How does a retailer have a good to offer without a manufacturer?

I'm not sure about the laws, but when my dyson broke after a couple of months argos had nothing to do with it and they said I should contact Dyson.
No news from Canon yet :mad:
@arcon - the printer was faulty within the first 9 months and it weighs a ton and I had a quote from RM for £22 for insured delivery0
