The retailer is responsible for dealing with it - they do not offer a 12 month retailer guarantee, but they are responsible for being the dealing party between customer and manufacturer.

They do have to offer the warranty - sale of goods act
    The manufacturer is completely irrelevant.
The method of redress, any repair company used; rests with the retailer.
They (the retailer) are not a "dealing party" between the consumer and anyone else. They are the responsible party.

Where in soga does it say a retailer has to offer a 12 month guarantee?

How does a retailer have a good to offer without a manufacturer?

I think you've misunderstood what was written...

I'm not sure about the laws, but when my dyson broke after a couple of months argos had nothing to do with it and they said I should contact Dyson.
No news from Canon yet
@arcon - the printer was faulty within the first 9 months and it weighs a ton and I had a quote from RM for £22 for insured delivery
