No, I think most posters just realised, having seen both sides of the story, rather than the one side you're referring to, they've realised you are in the wrong. Why on Earth anyone would tell you you're right when you're not I don't know.

They took the side of the person who was in the right, not because it was the employer.

Had you come on and said you handed in your notice, worked that notice and then said to us, 'my employer has not paid me my last wages, then everyone, without exception, would have sided with you. Because you would have been in the right, see what I mean.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Thanks for the last 3 responses, it's refreshing not getting a lecture when you're in a completely strapped for cash looking for some help.

Actually I learned something about psychology today. On most forums the responders take the side of the employee in almost identical situations. For some reason most took the side of the employer in this situation. I've concluded that it was because I posted part of my employment contract in my original post, where nobody else did in theirs. It must have subconsciously caused people to side with the employer. Very Derren Brown-esque.

What was your reason for not working out your notice?

If you're so strapped for cash why did you leave your job?

This is ridiculous! Surely then, if I had given my notice and simply called in sick every day for a week then I wouldn't be in breach of contract!

Why is it ridiculous? You're the one in the wrong here, not them.

On MSE you will get told the truth unlike the other places you appear to have found which tell you what you want to hear which usually turns out to be as much help as a chocolate fireguard.

The fact you don't like being told the truth isn't the fault of the posters on here.

You have created this situation for yourself. All you had to do was hand in your notice and work the week. You could have then left with your head held high and your wages in your hand instead of now having to battle for them with the threat of them suing for what could end up being easily in excess of £1000 hanging over your head.

Are you for real? "almost" identical isn't identical. Did you bother to read the link I posted for you or are you instead waiting for someone to tell you that you will be paid back the money for wasting someone else's time? The three responses before yours gave you as much of a lecture as others, the only difference was that they believe that you are owed the money. Now there's psychology for you.

What happens if you don't give proper notice to your employer?

If you don't give proper notice, you will be in breach of contract and it is possible for your employer to sue you for damages. An example of this would be if they had to pay extra to get a temp to cover your work. If you want to give less than proper notice, try and come to some agreement with your employer and if possible get this put in writing.

One place I worked at (retail) hired xmas temps. One left after 3 days. Due to the fact that they hadn't worked for a sufficient period (I think it is in a temp contract) they didn't get paid, as they argued that the first x amount of days is training, cost of hiring a replacement, etc.

OP, if you play nice with the director, maybe you won't get a truly awful reference/have to lie on your CV.

Also, I've found if you are less defensive with the forumites, generally they play nice too :)

(Edited to say: I think forumites do play nice, sometimes an OP might *feel* they are picked on as the answer to their question isn't what they were looking for)
