A lot cheaper: no fee, and they only make money on the difference between 'buy' and 'sell' rates and offer better rates than I have ever seen from a bank. Probably slower: transfers take a few days. In practice I expect that the landlady will want you to sign an agreement and then take a few days to sort out the paperwork, so the delay should not be a problem.

I'd probably take travelers cheques myself.

Make sure the "landlady" you would be subletting from has written consent from her landlord, stating it is OK to sublet. It is illegal in France to sublet without this written consent and you don't want to find yourself in hot water.
