Hi

As usual I am running out of space on my old chuggy laptop. But I use it all the time so really need to get some space back.

Looking at add/remove progs by size I have 5 x J2SE Runtime Environment 5 updates. Nos, 3, 6, 9, 10, & 11. There are all almost 120.00 MB each, do I need them all? Just working my way through the list, but would appreciate any advice on J2SE updates, and also any further suggestions to get some space back.

Thanks

A

More than likely it is simply counting the same core java program size, so it is only one instance of 120 MiB. So not worth removing the updates unless you wanted to remove java altogether but doubtless you'll come across something that needs it in order to run.

download and run CCleaner, that normally frees up a bit of space. You could also download SapceMonger which shows your disk usage graphically so you can easily see which files are using the most space.

Thanks. I have run ccleaner, defraged and run clean up. I do use ccleaner quite often and have saved masses of space with it. Will get space monger now and check that out, I am sure I had a similar prog, but can't find it! Still working on it but have manged to get 1/2 a gig back so far.

You could consider reducing the size of you IE cache, and system restore size.

No you don't need them all and can safely remove all except the latest update (11).

Also download and run CCleaner as another poster suggested.

Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup. Tick all the boxes on the Disk Cleanup tab and on More Options tick System Restore - Clean up and delete all but the most recent restore point.

theres plenty of info out there on how to clear up hd space.

CCleaner is great , as is add/remove , but you want to also delete tmp , images of cds and system restore points up to last good version.

I would reccomend reading the free software as replacements for microsoft stuff.Primarilly use vlc in place of media player , openoffice instead of any other , and anysle your usage dates to remove software only to install when you need it.

Another option is to go the linux route , format and install after checkin a "live" version as to whether it will work well enough on your pc.

If you carry music, video or pictures on your laptop it might be worth transferring them to stick/disc if you dont access them a lot as they all use up quite a lot of space. I also find that backing up files and documents onto my stick also gains space, just hold the most recent and relevant stuff on the hard drive.

Of course another option is to invest in an external hard drive. There's sopme great deals around nowadays.

Thanks, again. :D Still working on it. I do have an external drive, so really my C drive is mainly programs, programme files, & system files, not much of anything else really.

My laptop has a partition & D has some docs etc and more programs & files. But have enough space on there for necessary stuff.
