Do meters get reset before new occupants? Have just receive our first bill and it shows that our first meter reading was 0m3. After 2 months we have used 30m3, 500 litres a day between 2 people!
Is this normal??
Thanks

Meters are not re-set for new occupiers, they continue from where the previous occupiers finish.
If your property was occupied before you then possibly they never registered and when you opened your account your charges have started from a zero meter reading. If this is the case and you never took your own meter reading when you moved in, ask your water co to estimate your in read. They can do this by you giving them an up to date meter reading. They will then work out your daily averagee usage from your last actual read (30m3) and your current read and then work back 2 months what your in read would have been.
If however the 0m3 start read was the read that you gave them and is correct you may have a leak. To check for a leak take a note of your meter reading including all digits last thing at night. Don't use any water over night then take another meter reading first thing in the morning.
If you meter has moved you may have a leak. Depending on where the leak is you may be entitled to an allowance if the leak is on your Water Co's pipework, e.g. the meter. However if the leak is on your own internal pipework, e.g. cistern/shower, you may not be entitled to an allowance.
If the meter has moved and there are no leaks the meter may have been fitted on a comon supply pipe. This just means that the meter has been fitted to pipework that then splits off to supply two different propertys. As each of you use water it registers on your meter.
If none of the above apply you may have a crossed meter This just means that the water company have been given the wrong meter serial number that supplies your property by the builders, i.e. they have informed the Water Co that 1 Acacia Avenue meter serial number is number 12345, when in actual fact that meter serves 2 Acacia Avenue and your meter is number 34567. When the meters are read then your property is charged against the meter the water co. has on it's records a serving your property. You can check which meter is serving your property by somone turning on your taps while someone else looks at you meter to see if the meter moves when your tap is turned on and off. Likewise you can ask your neighbour to do the same.
Sorry if the reply is long winded, but a simple question can have a number of answers!0 -

Could it be that your 'first meter reading' was estimated?(under-estimated) or even the 30m3 estimated? - meter readings have an (E) e.g. 1234(E)
Average consumption for 2 people is around 120m3 a year so in 2 months approx 20m3 would be average.0 -
I do have to say one thing though, People can and do use a lot more water then they think when first moving into a new property and you have only used about 10m3 more then "normal" so have you had to really clean ? Wash more ( due to moving dirt) water a garden etc
It might be perfectly normal high use and will settle down once you are settledThere is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;

The first reading of zero makes me think that you might have had a meter fitted on change of occupancy, something the water companies are entitled to do.
250 litres per person per day is high but not impossible0 -
Normal course, if 2 people were never used except that 500 liters of water is only used for drinking.0

Check the toilet. Someone posted about high water usage, Turned out their toilet was on a constant trickle 24/7.
When they flushed the water didn't stop. It was barely noticable. Just a small trickle, With no noise.
But it soon adds up.
We are on a meter and we use less than £6 a week. And i have a pond, Flush the filters several times a week.
About 100 - 150 gallons a time.
We go camping also and its amazing how much water you can get through.
30L water barrel soon goes when washing in the morning.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
