New Special Offer after purchase

Hi all

I have recently purchased a new laptop from Sony. The order was placed on 17/07/12 and I received confirmation that it was being "built" on 29/07/12. Today I have just seen on their website that they are running a new special offer of a free extended battery. I am wondering, as it is so soon after my order was confirmed, do I have a claim to the new offer to be added to my open order?

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere on the forum, but I couldn't find anything via the search function.

Thanks in advance

you can ask them nicely, but they are not obligated to provide this for you, sales and offers happen all the time

Thanks, just thought I'd read/heard that if an offer came up within a certain time limit after a purchase you were entitled to have it included. No worries if not, just thought I might be able to save a few more quid ;)
  • No, you've agreed the price and spec when you signed up to purchase. They have no obligation to provide you with the extras (nor could they charge you extra if the prices were to go up!).

Doesn't seem much of an effort to give them a call and ask though, lots of companies would do it just to keep you happy and given it is only a new battery and not £500 off I'd expect that if you get a nice person on the phone they'll chuck it in.

On the plus side, if the price went up they would have no right to chase you for the difference

Did you order online, and have you received the laptop yet?

If the answers are yes and no, you should be able to cancel your existing order under the Distance Selling Regulations. You can then re-order, including the special offer.

However you'll probably have to wait longer this way.

I doubt very much if the DSR's will apply to this sale.

When you order a Sony laptop online it is a fairly detailed process and you get to choose processor, RAM, display type etc, so I'm pretty sure that it would class as a personalised item and therefore exempt from the DSR cancellation process.

I disagree. If it's a configuration from standard options then this does NOT constitute Personalised. Made-To-Order yes, but such items are still covered by the DSR cancellation rights (AFAIK).
  • I know that configuration options during ordering do not mean the DSR's don't apply, but when building a laptop to order it might be different as this might not be a simple configuration change.

When you order a desktop PC and want something changed it is normally a simple and very quick job to change a machine from the standard configuration, but with some laptops it can be a case of almost having to build it from scratch, especially if you are having a different motherboard and display from the "normal" fit.

If Sony actually build the laptop to the specification required rather than modify one that they already have in stock, I would think it would almost certainly class as a customised item.
  • I am pretty sure this has been discussed a number of times. If they are picking components "off a shelf" to a specific specification it is not a customised product.
