am I being harsh?

I bought an item from a private seller. Usually when a seller sells you often get a "marked as despatched" email or you get feedback fairly quickly, but there was nothing... ok, not exactly proof, but enough to make me a little suspicious of..

... thing is the item went really cheaply, 99p for a fairly valuable item, I was the only bidder. I was suspicious that the guy wouldn't send it or would find some excuse...

...sure enough 3 weeks later no sign of it, contacted seller who gave immediate refund and said it was lost in post, no tracking of course...

Anyway I left him neutral f/b stating "was the price to low to send?"

So I get an email from him saying it was unjustified, blah blah, I got immediate refund, blah, blah.

I'm tempted to say to him would you have preferred a neg instead.... I didn't trash his stars or anything like I could have.

So, what do you think? Am I being to hard on him? He's already got one neutral below mine for sending something out far too late that I didn't notice when I left the f/b.

I had a seller who separated 2 items from their accessories in a bid to get a better price i guess.

I bought one of the main items and another buyer bought the other one and both accessories, Almost instantly i get a cancellation request seems he only had one item to sell. Well i was the 1st bidder so i won that item then.

No reply. I negged and trashed his stars. So you seem fair to me.

I wasnt fussed if he had been honest but making stories up doesnt wash.

If I get a suitable resolution (i.e. a refund) I never leave neutral or negative feedback as it could have been a genuine error and I just don't see the point or have the energy.

I'm a strong believer in karma and that what goes around almost always comes around and it's rarely in the shape you dished it out (i.e. in this case it wouldn't be from the seller).

If on the other hand the seller is rude and won't make any effort then I see it as justified

No, I don't think it's necessarily harsh, but it's only if I'm forced to go to dispute to get my money back I leave non-positive feedback. I always try to resolve with the seller, and I'm relatively patient in INR situations, but I'm not happy if my attempts to resolve politely result in being stonewalled or given the finger.

If I'm refunded and no item turns up I don't leave feedback at all. I did not have a positive experience, and more than that, I don't want to incriminate myself in some sellers' minds that I have had an INR which means I'm a scammer.

Someone who doesn't send deserves all they get - but I would always make sure it was true and err on the side of caution as it is so easy to get feedback removed if a seller is relatively persistent with CS, and it is going to get even easier in the autumn.

crowqueen - what do you mean by 'and it is going to get even easier in the autumn.' I haven't heard about anything changing? thank you

I also agree that you have not been harsh but I tend just to not leave feedback at all if I'm not happy, not that I buy much, mainly selling just now

    Thanks for this.
I've recently have a buyer return an item as faulty, I know it's not the item I sent out so they got a new item and returned a battered one that I can't sell. I'm down by £30. I can't prove it so I lose out. I've gone for the karma approach as I know Ebay are hopeless for sellers.

I assume Crowqueen is refering to the changes due to come into effect in the autumn with increased seller protection.

New systems are coming in to make it easier to report buyers mucking the system around, asking for partial refunds, leaving barmy feedback and generally being naughty.

It hopefully shouldn't put any genuine buyers at risk from unscrupulous sellers - though I hope it will be made clear to some people that just reporting a neg is not going to get it automatically removed, and that eBay will publish clearer guidelines as to what they will and will not remove - but it should make the site a bit safer from unscrupulous buyers.

I am not saying OP is necessarily unscrupulous, just when leaving feedback, make it clear what the problem is, make it obvious that the seller is to blame and don't make any wild accusations that could be used by the seller to get it removed.

In this situation I would not have left feedback at all if the seller refunded promptly when requested. There is the possibility that it was not posted, but it is unfair to accuse someone directly in feedback of something that has not been directly proved, e.g. in an email or something.

You're right, leaving no f/b is what I usually do I was probably having a bad day. I'll contact him about sending an amend f/b request to eBay, I think thats the only way of changing it?
