Phishing question

I know what phishing is in theory, but what I want to know is does it only work if you click the link?
Ie, if you open an email that you suspect as a spoof from PP or something does the Phish only work by clicking on the link and not by opening the mail?

you need to click on the link, although there is a variant that uses a file/webpage to change settings in your router (if you have never changed the passwords only) to reroute ebay and other sites via a russainidentitytheft.com false ebay page to harvest your user-id + passwordEx forum ambassador

I'm asking based on a yahoo! mail ( supposedly from yahoo) I received saying I'd won $500. I didn't click the link but holding my cursor over it didn't raise any alarms. I'm just worried opening the email did something.
How would I know if something has happened?:dance:One good turn gets most of the duvet!! :dance:0 -
opening the mail should be ok...just dont click on any link within the mail

So you thought it might have been a real mail from Yahoo telling you that you'd really won $500.
Some people should have their PCs taken off them.

The title of the email was 'Message from Yahoo mail', when I opened it I saw what it was and worried that they had deliberately mislead me with the title so that on opening it something would happen. So keep it zipped unless you know the facts.

I can only go on the "facts" that YOU supplied us all with:I'm asking based on a yahoo! mail ( supposedly from yahoo) I received saying I'd won $500.
Make your mind up. You either did or you didn't.
