damp flat ruined all my belongings

hi.

thank you in advance for any replies or if this is in the wrong place and moved for me.

looking for advice for my daughter. her and her fiance rent a flat and it had had problems with damp. twice the repair people have came in and repapered one wall and repainted it with damp proof paint.

however she has complained that she has lost lots of clothes hanging in the built in closet due to the damp.and the clothes and shoes going mouldy, and the landlord said but we have done the repairs that is all we are bound by law to fix.

since then under her bed has become really badly moulded by the damp and her matteress and bed are ruined... she has had flu and sickness bug after the other since moving into the flat and i think it all due to the damp.

what can she do to get recompensed for her goods and surely at this day and age that a landlord must provide adequate heating and ventilation so this doesn't happen? i presume.

any help would be appreciated greatly..

Does she ever have a window open - anywhere will become damp if there is no air circulation.

The best thing they can do is move. Mouldy flats will damage their health not just their clothes.

The landlords have at least tried to do something and not just left it, but it sounds like the problems require some serious building work to rectify.

I would try and come to some deal to end the contract with no penalty due to the problems and find another flat.

Her health has to be the main consideration it's no fun living in those conditions.
We treat it far to lightly in the UK, in the states etc, it's considered a much greater health risk.

There is no option given what you have posted other than to find a more pleasant flat. ;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Why are your belongings in your daughter's flat ?

Short answer -Move - talk to LL about shortening term or paying compensation and find a better place to live.

  • Yes, duchy is right.

Or maybe call to one of companies to clean a flat from damp? It also an option. My landlord has said that tagema is good company, their device will remove your problem with damp, but there is a lot of companies, so read about them. it might be helpfull in the future, her helth is most important!

I'm struggling to understand why it is that somone would knowlingly leave all their belongings in an environment known to be damp and then complain that said belongings had been ruined by the damp. Its quite illogical.

    Cheers
