wrong, depends where you are and what the person prefers, and even then it is not a racist term.
You need to travel more, if you went to some parts of the US and called someone black you would soon regret it.
I did not say he was a racist. I said that many people regard the term the OP used as racist.
This debate is taking place on a UK website about the UK. I am well aware that there are different views on the subject in different countries but this is not relevant.
Like you I am tired of this thread!Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -
The opening post could not have been more racist if it had begun "Some dumbass !!!!!! snagged his rags on me cage......"
OP, like me, you are an agency worker. If, like me, you have been at your placement for over 12 weeks, you have the same rights as a permanent staff member and cannot simply be 'got rid of'.
Google Swedish Derogation which most agencies are using to get around this.0 -
You will find most black people prefer a certain term to describe their race, many times one may get it right but sometimes we guess wrong but guessing wrong does not make you a racist, it makes you a non mind reader, to be a racist takes more than a bad guess, throwing the term around loosely is only helping make the term racist seem less unacceptable.
Many blacks in this country prefer black but some do prefer coloured, where as in the USA many prefer coloured and hate the term black, they also use african american, so even more chance to get it wrong, as the Op sounds young I guess he maybe has heard the USA term more on xbox and the like, I know the kids in my family use americanisms more and more, with facebook etc.
Those that cry racist with no grounds are more bigoted than those they accuse.
Hope you weren't directing that at me....I didn't say anything about racism, just that in this country (or at least in London where I live) "coloured" sounds like something a much older person would say, we are doing the OP a favour pointing this out. Besides, the colour of the person's skin is irrelevant. The OP felt they were getting preferrential treatment due to the colour of their skin but this may not have been the case.
My advice to OP is, when you start a new job and want to impress your employers so they keep you beyond the probationary period is to work hard, get on with other colleagues, be helpful, friendly and enthusiastic. Getting into fights isn't recommended.0 -
