Square Foot Gardening (Merged Thread)

Lean on the sons to buy some wood, and knock together some raised beds [screws and a drill is all that is needed] and fill with compost - ask for them to make it for you for Christmas.
£50 is too much for 2 raised beds, for what you get. Make the beds 4ft square so that you can access it all round - you'd be able to make raised beds for the full area for £50 if you get it from a reclaim yard. Put the beds where the fruit bushes aren't and chop them back a bit.
Or, if you aren't too bothered about looks, just get any old containers, such as old plastic storage containers, and use those.
You can use the square foot principle in any of the above.0 -
yep.. lean on the boys.. get them to clear the ground rather than dig and then get some wood - scaffold boards/decking boards/scrap wood and some screws and make them - it won't actually take them long if they pull together and get on with it0

Raised beds can be made in no time, get your boys to get some would as already suggested and you could be up and ready for spring.
The ready made bed kts are really over priced so if there is another way try it first.Kind Regards

How ill are you? Because there is some help for disabled gardeners, I believe we had a thread about it some time ago.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0

I dont think we're that ill , I think up here to get help from the council you have to be dead . OH has heart trouble and I have ME, we can weed and stuff but not heavy digging.
One son, believe it or not, is a joiner and has tons of wood....but he rarely visits or does anything for us. The other son is great and willing but has no wood..0 -
Son 1 can provide the wood and son 2 the muscles then. Perfect!0

I imagine if you've had an aviary on the land, all that bird muck will have made the soil rich!
Raised beds are a great idea - I hope you can get together the help to get you started, but even if you can't, even a single square foot is more than nothing if you can clear that much and stick something in. If you can't dig, remember things will grow without it (weeds seem to manage nicely!) Don't make yourselves ill over it, though.Miggy
