I'm sorry if I'm being a little dumb - but following my first year of allotmenteering I am struggling to imagine how on earth SFG could suit potatoes. At first I thought maybe crops like this weren't suitable, but scanning this thread it seems that some of you have been very successfull with spuds! How does it work? I'm assuming it's important that your SFG goes onto existing soil for a start as spuds certainly grow deeper than 1ft. How do you manage to dig them out without mixing the soil underneath with the carefull mix of compost/peatmoss/vermiculite? Do you not disturb the surrounding plants when you dig them up? Do you have to stick to outside squares? (I can't imagine trying to dig up spuds in the center without standing on the soil) Doesn't earthing up become difficult?
I am sorry if some of these questions seem daft - maybe I'm just having a blonde day :rotfl: and yes I am blonde:o
Havent done this myself. However, I remember reading somewhere that you do things in the same way as you do for normal potatoes.
You put some soil in the bottom, then the potatoes then cover with the mix (a few inches), then as the shoots come through you put more mix on top and so on.

Sorry if this has been asked before. I can't find the square foot gardening thread and don't know if the answer is in there anyway.
I am planting peas in a bucket that is slightly smaller than a sq ft and don't know how many seedlings to put in it.
Thanks for any help.0 -

I'm not sure if this is the one that you want or not.

Thanks sb44. That certainly is useful but for peas it just says 'rows' which makes me think that my 4 plants per bucket might be a bit wasteful. Does anyone know how much space a pea plant needs?0

Hi Elliep
Not sure if this is right for what you are asking.. but here goes
I have some square pots about 18" square and I would only put a max of 4 peas in -1 at each corner-sticking a cane at each and tieing at the top to form a wigwam..
You don't want to squidge to many plants together as it stops the air from circulating and can stifle the plants and lead to mould problems..hope that helps-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50 -
..and you might find this useful:

I am going to have a go at square foot gardening and I am going to put 4 peas in a 12" pot.
I have ordered the 3" square raised bed from the Telegraph but I have also bought 6 square 12" tubs from Wilkinsons which are on special offer, 3 for 2 ie 3 for £5.98.0
