I received an incorrect penalty notice last week (company was dissolved in 2005!), tried 0845 number (incorrect) so called the enquiries number on the back of the letter - explained the situation and was put through to the appropriate dept - this lady told me to forward the letter to them with the reason I felt the claim was incorrect.

Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.
  • I also received this letter on saturday morning!!! I spoke to the tax office this morning and have sent the letter off too at the advice of the person in the office. I asked about the date of the letter and she said they were all sent out a week late and that i had until the 23rd april to appeal.

I put a list of questions in my letter, including why i had not been notified prior to them waiting nine months to send the letter out. I think if enough people complain, they'll have to sort something. By the sound of the womans voice this morning, shes had a fair few of these phonecalls!

Im glad im not the only one who had a big shock this weekend!

    What number did you ring?

I've been trying the 0845 7143 143 number and just getting the engaged/busy tone...

    Cheers
  • Hi yus

I rang the same number but i called at 9am on the dot. Got an engaged tone first time, then got through. This sounds like a major b*lls up, i reckon they're going to be engaged for most of the day!

The lastest line on this is appeals received in writing by 23 April will automatically be withdrawn. After that, well you may have to try harder.

The error comes from people filing P35 online, the default option was for a test submission (a tickbox) those who didnt spot this and untick it didnt therefore file properly, supposedly 20,000 or so.

Though given the penatly is tme based, telling people 11 months later is a bit of a cheek. Yet another case of HMRC IT systems being a total bag of poo.

Got another brown envelope today - again landed on my doorstep on a Friday, waiting for me to open it after work.

Shall i open it and ruin my weekend??? On the other hand, thinking about it would prob do the same to my weekend.

Anyways opened it and it was a revised penalty notice - revised to £0.00. PHEW!!!

No apology but i don't care. It least it has been sorted.

    Thanks to all the advises
  • I received a penalty for £900 but my company is now closed. Am I correct in thinking I still have to pay it as I am a director and as such responsible for the non filing?

Sadly I moved to Spain in Jan 06, closed my company and told Companies House but not the Inland revenue (doh!) so I think they must have sent reminders or whatever to my old UK address. Bummer! I have written to my local office explaining this, but have also paid the penalty as I am scared. It seems a little strange that it took 9 months to finally get my address though and also since the PAYE I paid in the 05-06 accounting period was £500 to have a £900 penalty for not telling them seems a little harsh.

    Any advice?

    Thanks in advance
  • what a mess.

Well, I've just received a notice for £1000 dated 4-Apr, have to appeal by 4 May.

My company only incorporated on 5 April 2006.

I really, really hate this country.
