Switching Broadband...practicalities+PLUSNET

Options
Hi

would be grateful if someone could just explain the details of doing this.

I have the MAC code but what actually happens:-

- should one specify a day for switch?

- how do you know it has happened? do you have to do anything to router etc?

PS if there is anyone on here thinking of using PLUSNET, my strong advice is do not. In 18 months I have never had a reliable service...speed can vary by a factor of 10 in a day (often down to dial up or less speeds) and I,ve never had even half the speed they claim my line could support. They put you through time consuming unnecssary obfuscatory hoops before doing anything to put you off filing a fault, blame the customer (I incurred great costs getting everthing checked), then BT... but never themselves , make it difficult ...sometimes impossible...to contact them, and every contact you start anew with (what one poster here has called) a geek.

Thanks

Unfortunatley you seem to have had a bad experience with Plusnet.

I have been a customer of them for 2 years now, and cannot complain about either my internet speeds or customer service. I am fair distance from my exchange but have always had good speeds, apart from the odd congestion problems at the exchange.

The only time I had a loss of service, which turned out to be down to BT and nothing to do with Plusnet, I found the CS to be quick and helpful and the the problem was sorted out within 2 days.

Plusnet are no different to any other ISP as far as having happy and unhappy customers, but a least I found that with their CS being UK based and not somewhere abroad you can talk to knowledgeable people rather then someone reading from a set script.

Had some awful CS time with plusnet last year and then decided to cancel and sent them that information. Within 3hrs I received a call back, an apology for poor CS and 2 months free. My speed has settled after 3 months and not 10 days and regularly get 5 mb out of 8mb. Tell them you want to go if things have not improved for you, and watch what happens. i know i recommend friends try Madasafish but here I am still with plusnet and happy (for now)
Currently 4 me its Rogers Contract cell phone, REBTEL.COM is the best mobile making and receiving calls to/from UK and Canada:beer:

    omg plusnet, I remember
    them god damn awful people,
you should have your MAC code/key
give this to your new supplier
they should give you a switch over date,
then on the day of the switch over
you put in your new details from your new supplier into your router
then you should be up and running again.

I joined Plusnet when they were the top company (2003) but had enough by last December and left. Their customer service was poor and took an hour to get through to and the email conked out or had delays of a week in delivery on a regular basis!

The switch with a MAC code is easy :)

I was with Plusnet, until my download speeds dropped from 1.8M to 300-400K, and at one time to 56K.

The only thing they were quick at was supplying my MAC - 5 hours !

    when you have switched,
on the day of the switch over,
you will have to put in your new detail's into your router.
if you don't have a router don't worry,
you usually get something from your new supplier with all the details of what you need to put in,
usually your email address and password,
BT you get a nice BT homehub and phone, which is very easy to set up,
alot of supplier's do free router's,
it just depends who you are going with,

I was thinking of switching to Sky from plusnet purely on price because I've never had a problem with plusnet in approx 2 yrs.I was intending to go to Sky's mid package at £5 pm compared to £14.99 with plusnet.

I emailed for my MAC code on Mon eve and within 10 mins I got a call from plusnet offering me a month free to "look at my options" and they also mentioned they have some new packages being released on 11 April which are aimed to compete with Sky on price.

So I'm staying at least for now!

    Hope this helps someone.

I was with plusnet for 2 -3 years, but when they changed everything,
it was diobolical, so I moved to bt
then that was an absolute headache
    had to get ofcom involved,
would never go back with them
