    Retirement.
    Emergencies.

But I enjoy having a life too, it's all about getting the right balance.

I'm saving for a new car. Mine is on its last legs so don't have much option as need it for work. Would rather spend the money on a holiday with the family but needs must.

It may be a bit soul destroying but if you can stay at home for 'cheap' then do so, as long as long as you can cope and still saving.

I agree with what you said in this paragraph, yes staying at home is soul destroying god knows I know that, but as you say renting is a waste when it is better to buy. And staying at home (another 3 years or so) will help with buying
    Car, do you need one?
I already own one on its final legs, however, I'm not sure whether I'm after a car for need or want. But my thoughts about that could make this tread many pages longer.

Its about knowing what I would find more important in life, after this tread I'm thinking I would like to save to buy a house. Which seems like the biggest challenge in the world!

And as boring, I have before thought about pensions but nothing serious enough to have one, as they're a bit boring and get me a little confused

    Thanx for your kind advice!

I'm just happy that my sons and their families will have a nice inheritance.

That's the best reply ever! Think I'll be saving just for the sake of saving :money: Instead of the crazy cat lady, I'll be the crazy bank account lady :rotfl:

Congratulations on your saving mentality :)

Just one thing though; don't think in terms of 'what can I spend my savings on'. If you do, you'll be constantly thinking of ways to get rid of your money and then you'll have lots of 'things'... but no money. The longer that you can go as you are the more that you will accumulate and the better position that you will be in. It is very comforting to know that you have enough money in the bank to cover any eventuality, but you only get to that point over time :) Best of luck.

Thank you for that. I think I had got to a point where I'm like 'Ok I've got enough money what things shall I spend it on' Thus getting rid of my savings, which would send me back a few steps, when I still have to do a lot of things in life, such as starting a family.

I will have to reassess and ask whether I missing out on enjoying the qualatative benefit of spending this money.

You took the thoughts out of my mind, I do wonder whether all this saving and saving, is stopping me from enjoying spending the money.

I so wished I started years ago but alas up to the age of 34 and a half I lived for the weekends, I saved small amounts but spent them on holidays or what ever it was I was saving for at the time. I hit 34 and a 1/2 and thought wow I have no savings no pensions nothing (I never thought I'd get past 30 years old, I was in denial that I'd ever get old!)

I now have long term goals of a house deposit & Pension.

Short term I need a new mattress, would love a pashley cycle and a holiday at Xmas

Mid term I have a savings plan for my 40th, Like to go somewhere like New York or Las Vagas with the girls......

I hope I didn't come over as tight. We definitely don't scrimp or go without.

For instance, we've spent, in the past two months, £4300 on three new TVs - Samsung smart ones.
Not that there was anything wrong with our old - 3 year old TVs - just fancied the Samsung smart ones.

We have everything we need - Have in a fair sized house with a swimming pool in the garden - Been to quite a few countries. Lived in Africa for several years.

I get more enjoyment spending on my sons and grandchildren, than spending on myself - just how I am.

Well...you've answered your own question. ;)
If you go for starting a family, you'll never again have to ask to yourself what to spend your money on :)

Im saving for my wedding. Been engaged for just over 2 years now and still no plans have been made yet.
I have no idea how much I need to save though. How do you even begin to plan a wedding?
I don't want it to be OTT but I do want it to be a little bit special :)

Before this I started saving for my house and its the best feeling to get your keys handed over to you, knowing all your hard work has paid off.

    Good Luck
