Since the landlord has no liability to make payment and the supplier agrees, it depends if the landlord is willing to involve themselves in a dispute and the OP & co can prove the issue to him/her.

Landlords sometimes like to try to remove an unpaid utility bill in refunding a deposit but they are not liable for the usage so I would question their motives...and whether the money ever makes it to the supplier...;):D

In all honesty, for the amount it is, I'd make sure he knew how little everyone thought of him for leaving his former housemates in the lurch, and pay it off.

I wouldn't want to risk a flag on a credit file in my own name for some other muppet, for the sake of what's right and wrong (don't get me wrong here, I agree you're right and all... just think of the impact to you guys and what's more important)

Deposits are lodged with the Deposit Protection scheme.

To release it requires consent from both landlord and tenant.

So whose signature is required from the tenant's side?
And who sends the money to the individuals?
