Housemate refusing to pay share of bill. Help!

A supplier wont enter into 3rd party disputes, the balance will need to be paid and BG wont care how.Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

You won't be able to transfer the remaining debt into a name that isn't on the bill. BG (and BG debt collection arm) can chase any of the named people on the bill for payment. Why not add his name to the account? If you show the supplier the tenancy agreement, they will change this straight away as the tenancy agreement is the legal document providing the liability. The names on the account are only liable until the suppliers gets this agreement allowing them to enact the changes.
You could split the payment.
Is Jay thinking he is not liable and because his name is not on the account, thinks he will get away with it? Would telling him the tenancy agreement has been accepted and his name is on the account, make him rethink? Or is he just an idiot?
Thanks to everyone for your advice so far0 -
He was in the house for 20 out of 48 days that this bill covers
So he actually owes about £14? (divided between 5 of you - £2.80 each)?
I know it's "the principal" and all that, but . . .0 -

Out of interest how would the court see this? Not that I think I'd bother with going to court over this amount of money0 -
I don't disagree with you, he should pay, but is it worth the time and energy?
I'd pay, then as suggested by pmlindyloo (post 7) send him a Letter Before Action . . . name and shame on FB seems a good idea as well.
No idea what a court would think about a claim for £37.

Sorry. but we all know "students" do not live in the real world. They go to uni and after 3-4 years boozing and having a great time they get a worthless degree in arts and design or in roman arcitecure etc.
and expect the world at their feet. As previous posters have said learn from this and move on. £7 for god sake!
Is that really relevant? Being a student is a choice that many of us choose to make, and we don't deserve to be tarnished unfairly with the same brush.0 -
Write to his mum.... she'll kick his 4rse.0

You go through an entire year of splitting bills equally and then one person turns round to say 'sorry guys I don't have to pay that bit because I wasn't there'. We were also all on the same length tenancy agreement and if you move out early you still have to pay the rent for the remaining time so you'd think with the bill it would be the same principle?

No it does not. As already stated, each one of you is jointly and severally liable for the entire remaining debt. It does not get divided up in any kind of shares. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Contact the landlord ASAP, he may agree to take the debt out of this person's deposit. I've known it happen before in this kind of situation.0
