How do you use your smartphone to pay at the till?

You need a phone that is NFC enabled. There aren't many around at the moment in the UK.
It works basically like the 'contactless cards' model.
I'm not aware any banks in the UK partnering with the phone companies at the moment to allow the use of NFC capable phones for payment.
There are some card companies that will send you an NFC sticker though, that you could fix into the back casing of your phone. Depends on your bank/card issuer though.0 -

I think you've been confused by the answers you've been given.
There are a huge amount of retailers that will accept contactless payments(ie you hold your contactless enabled card against the retailers POS terminal (usually for max. value of £15-£20 only)), but your question related to being able to do it with your phone.
This is a list of the current NFC enabled phones

But to my knowledge, none of the UK banks have yet partnered with these suppliers to enable their NFC chips for payment purposes.0 -

Tony, you appear up to speed on the topic, would the link to the bank be via a wallet feature to the NFC ? Similar to say paypal.0 -
Indeed, if you don't mind a bit of hacking though, you can use Google Wallet, they even give you $10 for signing up.
You can actually use the PayPal app to pay at certain places, it displays a bar code the retailer scans.0
