Fleas/Frontline question...

  • That would be good If I could. It's prescription only so I'll have to go through the vet for either the product or a prescription.

I have also wormed though with Drontal Plus, on 24/07/12. Would that matter? Advocate is normally prescribed in conjunction with Droncit in my experience.

With the usual caveat that I run it by my vet, could I use Advantage now? I'm guessing I need to check what the active ingredient is to make sure it's not the same as Frontline....? I only ask as It doesn't need a prescription (my vet charges £16 for a prescription). My lot are all due vaccines later this month so I can bring them forward to Monday and speak to the vet then. I will spend the money if I need to, but if I can save a bob or two then I might as well, if you see what I mean. It's so much more expensive from the vet.

Yes, it's the same active ingredient as Advocate but Advocate also contains moxidectin so needs to be used with caution if other wormers have recently been used, especially Milbemax, but Advantage is fine with Drontal Plus.

  • Thank you Chameleon. I will order the Advocate but will run it by my vet when I do the vaccines, before I use it.

Last question - honest... (for today anyway!!)

Should I spray the house again tomorrow as planned, or am I better off waiting until I re-do the flea treatment and do it all on the same day? I'm sure I'll get a vet appointment for Monday or Tuesday, but the Advocate might not arrive before I go camping on Thursday.... oh heck, perhaps I should just get the Advocate from the Vet and be done with it!!

Yes, spray the house as many times as you like. For the Advocate, you'll need to collect a prescription from your vet anyway so might be easier to just buy it from them.

  • Sorry, I'm mixing up my Advocate and Advantage!

If I use Advantage I'll get it online. Much cheaper but might not arrive before I go camping.
If I use Advocate I'll get it from the vet. More expensive but immediate.

I'll check out the delivery times on the websites tomorrow and make a decision then, since I can't ring the vets to book an appointment until Monday morning anyway. (The Vets are there on Sunday morning, but on Monday I'm having loft insulation put in and they're ringing me early on Monday to let me know what time they'll be coming, so can't book till I've had that call.)

Thank you for all the advice!! I'm suddenly feeling much more positive!!

Advantage would probably be the wiser (and cheaper) option considering you've already wormed them. Have you ever considered using Program in conjunction with topical flea products? It's something often recommended for problematic flea infestations as it sterilises the fleas so they can't breed or lay eggs. Can be administered as a 6mthly injection or a monthly oral suspension in food.

  • Haven't used program in years! I hadn't given it a thought actually but if it's good then I'll add it to my list of products to look at tomorrow. My one concern would be that my female cat won't eat food with stuff added to it so I'd have to put it directly in her mouth and then hope she'll eat her food and not sulk. She's always like that, if you add anything medical at all she won't eat it. My male cat will be fine, the dog won't notice there's anything there.

p.s your pm box is full...

Chameleon also suggested the injectable Program. Glad she did because I had it in my head that lasted three months not six, so thanks C for that reminder! I remember using the one that was added to food back in the day, absolute nightmare with one cat eating half a dose and the other cat eating one and a half doses or neither cat eating any. :rotfl:

  • Yeah, but I can't get injectable online so would have wait till my vet appt. I don't know if my vets stock it, they tend to only stock the products they recommend (Advocate/Droncit) although they will happily order anything else if you prefer it. Unfortunately I'm going away on Thursday so don't want to risk leaving it.

I *think* we are talking about when the Frontline is out of their system: you can't topical treat before Thursday with any veterinary type product for another couple of weeks anyway.
