Blackberry 8520 data on Vodafone PAYG

Can anyone offer me a little advice?

I have a PAYG Blackberry 8520. I bought this SIM FREE, new about a year ago, it gets very light use.

I never really needed to use the data, but I recently switched sim from 02 to Vodafone because they offered 500mb of data a month for £10.50. However, I can't get it to work when I try and connect to the internet using Vodafone. I keep getting a message "unable to connect to the internet please try later - if this problem persists please contact your provider".

I've set the APN to pp.vodafone.co.uk and tried both web/web and wap/wap to connect but without joy.

I called Vodafone and had a really awful experience with an Indian call centre that kept trying to upsell me a £5 a month Blackberry add-on, but I don't want that. I don't need Blackberry messenger or email services - I'm content with my web based gmail (which I could access no problem at all with my 02 sim and by using wifi).

Common sense tells me that standard protocols mean that if one type of data enabled phone can use pp.vodafone.co.uk to connect to the Internet, the Blackberry should be no different - it's just a data enabled phone after all. Am I missing something here - like I say I don't want the Blackberry extras like messenger and email that you have to pay for, and I'm sure this is a separate package where you use a blackberry specific apn.

    SOLVED
The fix was simple. Dump Vodafone and go back to 02. The Indian call centre was appalling, and on top of their tax dodging antics I won't ever use them again.

I think you would have problems going through 500MB on a phone only capable of GPRS/EDGE. :)

    Have you tried GiffGaff?

Also O2 have a deal for the Curve 9320 with 3G for £11 per month including the Blackberry Internet Service and a call/text/data bundle, if you have been a PAYG customer for six months or more.

You can then wipe your 8520 and sell it on eBay or the like.

I've no desire to change my handset, but thanks. I've got it doing everything I need it to do :-) 3g is non existent here and I'm happy with GPRS speeds for what I do with it.

It's a great deal mind you, thanks.
