Broadband Line Rental?

I'm a student trying to set up broadband in our house next year. There's been previous broadband connections to the house, however I'm unsure about what we'd need exactly.
We don't want a phone.
We want internet.
But do we need "line rental"?
Could someone please clarify what line rental is.
For instance O2 all-rounder sounds perfect:
The All Rounder
Up to 16meg Unlimited From £12.50 per month for 12 months
But I can't find if there are other hidden costs...

Line rental does what it says on the tin.
You rent (pay for) the physical connection between your residence and the telephone exchange. It pays for the use of the infrastructure and maintenance of the line.
Its much like the standing charge you pay for other utilities .
Boradband is exchange specific, check on Samknows what LLU services are available as they will be the most competitive. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
If you want ADSL it has to run over a phone line, and you need line rental to cover that. Sky, BT, and possibly others will do the whole lot as a package for you (but the underlying phone line is BT's regardless of who you pay your bills to).
Alternatively Virgin do cable broadband and you can have it without a phone line, but there is a charge for doing it that way.0
