A shopkeeper gave me for free the following items:-
Two sealed jars of smooth peanut butter (dated 07/2007)
Four bags of striped sunflower seeds (BEST BEFORE END:NOV 2007)
Two airtight packets of peanuts (no skins) (date illegible)
The shop itself later temporarily shut down due to hygiene problems (rats) so put me off consuming these items.
Are these products safe to eat?0 -
Nuts go rancid so quickly ... and tbh the rat thing would put me off too so they'd go in the bin at my house, I'm afraid. However, I'd give the jars of peanut butter a good wash, open one and taste it. If it was rancid then I'd chuck that too, but if it was ok I'd use it (but use it up fairly quickly - a year is quite a long time out of date for peanut stuff).0

rofl.
I would use it if there was no obvious bad smell or taste.
i've recently used ancient nuts i found in a pack at the back of my cupbaord, just toasted them to get rid of the stale flaour before dumping them in some brownies!

Give em to the birdies, and get a warm glow watching them munch!0

I just threw out some macadamia nuts last week as they were rancid, fortunately only a few."Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

I'd concur with vwjo, see if the birdies want them;) They'll be unlikely to touch anything obviously *off*You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0

Thanks for the replies. 'So will the appearance, smell and taste definitely make obvious whether the nuts and seeds are rancid or not? By giving them to the "birdies", I assume "the warm glow" as I watch them "munch" is because they are enjoying them? Or that they are okay for me too?!!0

We've just found a stash of eggs left over from easter (this year). The Use By date was April... Am I right in saying they would be perfectly OK to eat? Chocolate has sugar in it, and sugar is a natural preservative is it not. So surely they will still be good for some months to come? I'm fine with it, but wife is unsure and her uncertainty is putting me off! :rotfl:SIMPLE SIMON - Met a pie man going to the fair. Said Simple Simon to the pie man, "What have you got there?" Said the pie man unto Simon, "Pies, you simpleton!"0
