  • Just want to say how delighted I am to read how many of us refuse to be fooled by sell by dates. It's obviously in the supermarkets' interest to have us distrust the senses human beings have used for centuries when deciding what was safe to eat. They have a vested interest in de-skilling us: cooking, nutrition and cleaning are other areas where they seem to want to take over our lives and make us dependent on them. We hear so many complaints about the "nanny state" but never a bleat about nanny supermarkets.

I've been known to eat eggs that a few days out of date to no ill effects.

Just make sure that they don't smell when you crack them and that you cook them through. :D

I would still use them, what have you got to lose? you'll know if they're ok as soon as you crack them. I've used older ones and they've been alright. After all, what did people do before everything had a date on it?

there's something you can do to see if they are still fresh or stale. you get a jug of water and put in the egg (un cracked) if it floats it means one thing if it sinks it means the other but i cant remember which way round it is!!!
  • ok thanks everyone i will use them. I am sure i will find out if they are gone off by smell when i crack them.

Crack them individually into a cup - that way if one is bad, it won't taint the others!
