Am I mad thinking of going back to old style?

Currently I have an xperia x10i, android smartphone, great phone but as what often happens with me is it goes a bit wonky! keeps crashing, battery can't decide how full it is ect ect, basically im a curse on technology cos that type of stuff always goes wrong when im around :rotfl:

Anyways I need a new phone so just didn't know whether to go for another xperia or go for an older, more sturdy type like a k770i?

I will only go for sony phones as I just get along with them and have had sonys all the way, I have tried other makes but sony works for me.

The thing is the xperia is about £150-£200 and the k770i is £30!!! Are they really worth that much more money?
I do like my phone, apart from it being a bit too big(small hands!) and have no probs using it, I mainly use it for browsing and the odd call and if i had the cash would just go for an upgrade but I don't, so it would have to be via the trusty catalogue, no interest mind which is good, i just don't pay upfront.

Has anyone gone back on technology and prefered it? or have you gone straight back to the smartphone asap?

Thoughts please, thanks, chocdonuty :)

  • So you've only ever had Sony phones because Sony works for you but you never have luck with technology/phones? Thought about changing brand?

I'd agree. I used to have Sony Ericsson phone when I had a mobile phone. I then upgraded to an LG Smartphone when my contract was up, it wasn't a good phone (it turned out to be faulty) but it just worked so much better then the Sony Ericsson, it put me off Sony Ericssons big time! I think maybe try Sony (without the Ericsson- the partnership has since been cut). I have many Sony devices and they are great, it just seems to me that since they made that partnership the products produced as a result were terrible and made Sony look bad!

I'd suggest the Sony Xperia (if your dead set on not trying something else- which I think is a big mistake, there are many brilliant models out there!) or look for a Samsung or HTC. Nokia smartphones seem to be love/hate for many on here and really, until you've played around with the handset its not going to be as easy to decide as they all work and feel slightly different and its about what you need and what you prefer.

Only you will know what is good for you. Try both phones in a shop for while maybe over 2-3 days and see which one you like. The phone you like on the first day may not seem that good on the following day.

Also I have read on here that some phones may have a signal problem due to firmware if you buy the sim free version. The phones provided by network are fine.

I understand your plight, when I got my Satio the 1st few days I hated it (had a K850i before that) , many people I know that had switched to smartphones experienced a learning curve, that said after a time of setting the handset up how you want eg keyboard and commonly used functions, then the advantages start to come through. That said all things are not equal, with the Sony (others probably the same) you can adopt the 12 key keyboard and with something like the Ray, P or U, then it is a size similar to the K770 and can be used with one hand easily, although my wildfire has 12key set up, the predictive text is not as intuitive as the Sony :o

I went from several SEs to a very basic LG smart phone because they offer was unbelieveable and it took me some time to get used to it. Other than it not having the best screen and being rather slow I cant really complain.

I've just got an Xperia U for my mum on a great deal from Talkmobile, it will be here first smart phone but having had a play with it its streets ahead of my LG and I'm sure she will get used to it.

Trouble with going back to a basic phone is you would probably miss things like the screen for browsing. Maybe the best thing to do is try a few others and see if you like any and then see what you can get by selling/recycling your phone.

I have a whole fleet of K750's and K800i's - even bought a few more from China a couple of years ago. I have had (and still use) some smart phones - I use one when I'm not at home for internet only. My main phone, which is in use every day and night - is one of my original K750's. It's about 5 or 6 years old, as good as the first day I got it, with the original battery which (despite so much use) only needs charging once in about 8 days.

For calls, texts and a few other things it's much better than any smart phones I've used.

I've had my current J10i2 for 2 years. Was at the end of my contract and switched network to a sim only deal... and paid £20 to get my handset unlocked coz I love my wee phone!! This is my 4th Sony Ericsson and I wouldn't go for anything else.

I don't like qwerty keyboards on phones and I hate touch screens. Very few options out there for a bog standard phone, but they def have their plus points :D

I agree about using older, basic , long-battery-life handsets where appropriate. Whenever I go on holiday, I take one of my trusty old Nokias as I don't want any roaming data charges! I use a sim pin lock, so if I have the phone stolen, then (a) I don't lose a lot of money and (b) my data that I hold on my Androids is safe.

Sometimes I use the Nokias in the UK in the summer as they are smaller, don't leave me stranded with a dead battery and fit into my shirt pocket as well.

The only downside I have nowadays is that I used to use the Nokia PC suite to keep them all in sync, but since Androids have been my main phones for some 18 months, I use Google as my sync/back up and haven't got round to finding a reliable way to sync my androids and Nokias.

I don't have that problem, since I only use mobile internet as and when - and I have an Android phone on one of my contracts. Actually has always worked very well, having multiple contracts. Starting to again; now I have 4 T-Mobile contracts and on two of them I can now use (from my bundles) to call all 08 numbers; some have internet, one of which I use on the smartphone; some have free voicemail, some have free message reports, I don't use T-Mobile for certain texts as they charge for Isle of Man registered numbers. If signal is poor on one I usually have a second (or third) phone on a different network with me. All free, of course (as you know!); in fact, rather better than free...!

Don't worry about others. Use the phone that you think is right and correct for you. You will be using the phone not others
