Move it yourself, £500 is a bit steep for undoing 2 bolts in my opinion.
Make sure you don't refit it so that it runs backwardsIT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

All this talk of expense to move utilities is largely unjustified. The reason why people think its expensive is becuase they still have it locked in their heads that utilities are still nationalised and should therefore do things for free or cheap.
That was long ago when we had the likes of the British Gas Corporation. Things got done cheaply or free because the industry subsidised much of the cost. i.e they'd put you in a new gas service free or cheap because they knew they would benefit by selling you gas. no one else could do it.
The public bleated and bleated for years so Thatcher gave them what they craved. A free market and competition.
So then National Grid and others own the distribution network. They OWN it,its their asset and their property so they decide who works on it.
If someone wants a connection or alteration to it,they have to charge otherwise who would pay their costs? National Grid dont sell gas so they cant get it back that way.
Much of the expense it not it bits of new plastic pipe etc. Much of the cost is actually involved with excavating and re-instating the public highway. Its an expensive business and must be done to the spec of the local authority and often prior notification has to be given (opening notice) and also often has to be completed in a specified time or risk a possible fine.
So then, its actually a fair price.
There are builders who either dont know or choose to ignore these issues. They will even build over gas mains, enclose them in the building structure etc.
In such circumstances, the building control officer should be putting them right but sometimes even they dont know any better!
It has been known for supplies to be cut off in the road when such contraventions are deemed to be potentially dangerous.0 -
apologies for repeating myself..MSE poor throughput again..0

Well, its April 2009 and the prices have risen again. I was quoted £855 for EDF to move the cable 8 feet, nearer to the electricity supply (to new extension wall and cabinet) - but only quoted £550 from scotiagasnetworks £550 to move the gas supply 10 feet to the new extension cabinet.
What rubs me up the wrong way ... is that the builder already dug up the concrete over the services as the drainage is quite near. I'm in the wrong job!0 -

o digging involved - that rather depends on where the service pipe is and where they want it moved to doesn't it.I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0 -
I've been quoted 3,000 quid for 150 yards of 3 phase from an existing transformer along existing over head poles. Ah yes it also cost me 218 quid to send someone to take a look and type up the quote.0

Good idea if you want to invalidate your house insurance if something goes wrong! Get hassle from National Grid Transco when the meter reader tells them the meter location has changed! Pay to have the work done properly or leave it were it is.
they are likely to be facing charges as well as it is an offense for a non gas safe registered person to touch the gas pipes just as it is an offense for them to do anything with gas appliances.I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0 -
