Credit Card Fraud

in Credit cards
Got a letter this morning from my credit card asking me to call them urgently regarding fraud.
I rang them up as I was worried as the card in question has not been used since last year - I cut it up to stop me spending!
They told me that someone has tried to make various purchases on the card including one for £700 and another for £350 with the Carphone Warehouse!
There have been others as well for £50 here and there.
However, my credit card company blocked all of these sales and did not let them go through as they thought it was strange that I was spending this much after so long so thankfully I haven't lost anything!
I know normally we aren't thankful towards banks as they can be very horrible and have poor customer service but on this occasion, I was very thankful to them
Just thought I'd have a rant about it because I couldn't believe it. It's mad what people will try and do these days!
I have no idea how they could have got these details because as I've said I cut the card up last year!

If they didn't you might think of asking them as your PIN maybe compromised.0 -

I think I know what Stacey is driving at here.
DON'T call the number on the letter, but find it out for yourself either via their website or on your statements. It could be that the scammer has sent you the letter.
Also, ask them to verify they are who they say they are by providing you with a piece of information that a potential fraudster would not know.
Only then should you proceed with the call.0 -

Oh right - I didn't think of that. I've already called them as soon as I got the letter because I panicked.
I'll phone them again tonight but I will call a different number from my statements - thanks for bringing that up0 -

No problem.
When you speak to them, it might be worth asking them to check if they have a record of your call this morning and to confirm that they did indeed send the letter.
If they don't (or didn't), tell them you may have been a victim of fraud and ask them to take it from there.0 -

Hi,
Just wondered if you phoned and how you got on with the different number? Sometimes I think scammers are getting too clever. It's quite feasible that they could send a fake letter to get your details......scary. They seem to think up all sorts of other ways to trick us. Hope yours was a genuine one.debt free...yippee

Hiya
Thank you all for your replies and advice.
I phoned my bank up on a different number from my statements and it was them that sent me the letter - they had a record of my phone call and confirmed that the account was now closed and re-opened under new details.
However, last night before I phoned them I was checking my emails and had an email from the same bank saying my password has now been changed for my new online account!
I was really starting to panic then - thought they had somehow found out my new details.
So when I was on the phone to them I asked them about this also. Apparently this is the fraudster that is trying to get back into my account!
Have they now realised the account has now been stopped!
Can't believe what some people will do - they are very clever I'll give them that.
Anyway its all sorted now and I've told the bank that I never have and I never will use online banking for my account so they have made a note of this so if they try to set it up again on my account, they can find out who they are.
Thank you all for your help0
