eBay Seller not claiming my payment from Paypal?

Not too sure what to do with a recent ebay purchase so I'm after advice if anyone can help.

On Monday morning I bought a PS3 console on eBay for a good price, but not an unfair price on the seller. Although if the auction had ended on a busy period rather than 11am Im sure they could have got a bit more for it.
I paid via Paypal as soon as the auction was finished and then had a DOH! moment when I relaised the seller had 0 feedback.
I know that everyone starts somewhere on eBay but in 12 years on eBay I've only had issues with new members.
However, the deal was done and so I just went about it as normal.

Anyway. Over 24 hours after I paid, the seller contacted me to say that they would post it as soon as I paid them, which obviously confused me as I've already paid.
When I looked at my Paypal account it says that the money has been 'unclaimed' as of yet by the seller, so it's showing up as not paid on ebay.

I've sent the seller a few e-mails now politely asking them to accept the money and pointing them to pages on eBay if they are having issues with Paypal.
So far they have not replied to any of my messages.

This wouldn't concern me too much if they hadn't listed another item for sale last night 2 hours after I sent my latest message, so they are obviously ignoring me.

I'm now not sure what to do. If i do nothing then I assume I can be negged as a non paying buyer and they get to relist.
If i cancel the Paypal transaction I'm sure the same will happen.
But at the same time, whats the point in raising a Paypal claim if I can just cancel it?

I've never heard of this happening before, and to be honest I'm really annoyed at being blanked by the seller when they have obviously been online.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Many thanks!

I've had this before and the email address had been input incorrectly on Paypal. I had to cancel my payment and the seller had to send me an invoice which I had to pay via Paypal for goods. The seller will have the same problem with the next item they sell so they do need to sort it out.

Try contacting the seller via the Paypal email address and you should see if it's a correct email address or getting bounced back to you.

As above it means their paypal address is wrong and unless they can add that address to their paypal account they cannot claim the payment.

Incidentally a seller cannot neg a buyer, but you can neg them- so dont worry about that.

  • Thanks for that - I've now emailed their Paypal address with a polite request to accept the payment.
However, if they are seeing e-mails to this address then surely they should have got one by now from Paypal saying they have funds waiting?
I'm also dubious of them not seeing e-mails from ebay since they've been listing items.

I've also requested their details from eBay, so If i don't hear from them I'll maybe give them a call to try and sort it out.

The paypa address though is wrong, so they won't see any messages at all from it, nor will they get an email to say payment is unclaimed. The only messages they will get are via the ebay system.

  • If this is the case though then they are just ignoring my ebay communication, because I've sent 4 messages to them over the past 4 days via the ebay system. The only thing I haven't tried (until this morning) is their Paypal address.
I'm just trying all avenues to try and get them to respond now.

I'm now getting the feeling the item went for less than they wanted and are messing me around till they can claim I never paid and cancel it - as it shows up in ebay that I haven't paid yet.
  • I had this with a new person to ebay. I just sent them a nice message via the ask the seller a question part of the listing saying that on my end it showed the money was unclaimed. I don't know what was wrong at their end, something to do with their paypal account, yes it took slightly longer to get the item but get it I did and we all have to start somewhere with ebay. I'm sure it will be fine and anyway if not all you have to do is start a dispute. Keep watching that unclaimed pound symbol!

If the payment is unclaimed the OP can reclaim the money himself with need to a dispute. However if seller will not respond to the OP to give a correct paypal ID the OP may well not get their item, as as far as seller is concerned they have not paid.

OP, I might be tempted to phone, as you suggested earlier.

Personally I'd start claiming for a refund and purchase elsewhere, unless you're the type with outstanding patience to hold their hand through their first eBay sale.
  • Thought I'd update this for those that helped out.

The same day as I started this thread I got an e-mail from the buyer saying that he had been called away and only had access to eBay on his mobile. This doesn't explain how he managed to list items during this time he wasn't responding to me, but I'm just glad he got in contact.
That was Wednesday, and he promised to send out the PS3 by Friday at the latest.
To my pleaseant surprise, he was good to his word and it's arrived today.

Very strangely though, despite me asking on several occasions for him to accept the money he has from me in Paypal, this has still not been done and is still showing up as 'unclaimed' in my Paypal.
If he was dealing with a less honest buyer this surely leaves him wide open to trouble as the 'cancel' option is still available to me in Paypal.

For me however I'm viewing this trade as done. I've paid the money, receieved the goods and advised the seller several times to claim the money.
I'll send him one more message letting him know i receieved the goods and advising him one last time to collect his money.
Not sure what else I can do. You can lead a horse to water and all that.

Good to hear that you got your PS3 and that it was a genuine mistake on the buyer's part. Of course, items could have been listed to go "live" on a certain day.

No idea what to add about the unclaimed money though!
